Do students majoring in English and History often supplement their freshman schedule with a Math, Econ, Comp Sci (etc) class? I’m wondering how to avoid four classes that are all reading-intensive and focused on papers.

In a word, pleinelune, yes. My senior (political theory, history) has always taken a balance of courses, balanced in terms of amount of writing, amount of reading, type of thinking required, depth versus breadth, established interest versus totally new content, class size (lecture versus seminar), credit versus S/NC, and so forth. My senior is encouraging my freshman (English, music, TAPS) to think about his course selection in the same way.

Shopping period can be stressful. Try not to feel overwhelmed. Try to stay connected to the sense of excitement and possibility. The feelings that made you want to go to Brown in the first place.

It’s really not that hard. You get syllabi on the first day of class, if not earlier, so you can evaluate the timing of various papers and choose classes or work out agreements with professors wisely.
