How do I answer this specific application question?

“If you could bring only three things to [school I’m applying to], what would they be and why?”
I feel like saying something like bringing a laptop or bringing a specific book I like would be too obvious and bland, but at the same time something like a flower that reminds me of family sounds too off? I’m really unsure about this question, advice is appreciated.

Relax! There is no wrong answer! They are trying to get to know YOU, not US!

I understand your consternation. I would answer in practical terms for one (you were thinking lap top) but use the opportunity to talk about how you would use it (work, keeping in touch with family, programming etc), and then the other two items should also reveal aspects of yourself that you want to share about what’s important to you. GL!

I think the best answer would be one that gives the admissions team more insight into what makes you you - perhaps something connected to your hobbies or interests, what’s important to you. It seems like a simple question on the surface but can be used to impart more of your character, what makes you tick into your application.

I think a specific book is fine if you tell why that book is important to you.
