How do i catch your attention >?

In the question on who introduced you to brown in the application -

I mentioned hat my father got admitted to brown but could not pursure his dream education due to personal reasons(read: no money). He wanted to see his dream fullfilled through his son . this was how i was introduced to brown -

Will this help or hurt?

note: i am from india -applying RD
not asked for aid

It depends… do you actually want to go to Brown, or is your dad pressuring you into it? And if you do really want to go to Brown, did you make that clear in your application?

I believe cowtipper brings up a good question. You may wish to have a friend look at your app to see if they think your interest in Brown comes through, or if your Dad’s influence shows up stronger. This may mirror the adcom review of your application. Good Luck!

yeah i thought of that angle too…i made it very clear that as an international my only window to the university was the website apart from my father. I also made it very clear that I was applying to brown not because my father asked me to but because i wanted to. That is why i did not mention this anywhere in the why brown part…instead i spoke about how its diversity will help me etc…which are some the real reasons why i am applying to brown

bump…

“instead i spoke about how its diversity will help me”

barf I don’t think they’ll like the d-word

WHY? … it doesnt seem tooo stereotypical, and it is the truth
I linked it to my real life experiences

I believe that your comment is certainly the WRONG THING TO SAY. You could have said that " that my father got admitted to brown but could not pursure his dream education due to personal reasons " …and that’s how I learned from Brown…and that’s it. The whole thing about …“living his dream through his son…” certainly introduces the BIG question of how pressured and manipulated you may have grown up, feeling you NEED to attend Brown to some how make your dad feel better…

Everyone is likely to see it that way. These schools like independent thinkers, leaders…"My dad wanted to go to Brown and he could not…and while telling me all the time about his dream school, I learned about the other Ivies…then I realized that Darmouth was a perfect fit for me…eventhough that was going to disappoint my father…so…I am applyin to Darmouth !!

Much better.
