My guitar teacher had asked me if I wanted to be in Advanced but once I mentioned I would have to drop AVID for it, she decided to not let me make the switch. She feels as though AVID will help me greatly. I talked to my counselor and she said the same thing. I’ve had AVID since the 7th grade and I don’t feel like it actually helps me. I’ve only stayed because its sort of like a free period where I can catch up on my work and socialize. I argued that there are plenty of bright students who don’t have AVID and they do fine! I’ve maintained a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school, without the help of AVID. I know what I must do to get into college. I don’t need AVID!! I really want to be in Advanced Guitar this year!! In my Beg. Guitar class, I’m very lonely and bored; it puts me in a terrible mood. In Adv., I wouldn’t be so lonely and bored! Adv. Guitar would also switch a couple of my other classes as well, which is another reason why I want to be in it. I’ll have classes with old friends who I haven’t been able to talk to because of our schedules. Please help!

Just ask her
If you have a 4.0 GPA there should be no reason to keep AVID- just manage your time at home

Are you a freshmen bc at makes a difference?
I’ve been in avid since freshmen year and honestly, it has been not a great use of my time. However, sophomore year I was able to make my college list and study for the psats during the school day and junior year has been extremely helpful- sat prep during the school day, making my college essay during the school day, etc. this might give you insight on why they dont want you to switch just yet.

I think that of you are going to continue to use your schedule wisely by taking advanced classes, they should be able to let you switch. I would advise you to make a four year academic plan and show them what would replace avid every year instead. Probably typed bc it looks more professional. And maybe get your parents involved if they still don’t let you switch. It seems more like that they arent taking your decisions seriously which means you have to make them by changing the way they see you and probably presenting yourself more professionally.

I really hope this helps. Sorry if it doesnt. :(
