How do I find out if this course is equivalent to Math 51?

I am looking to take a summer course at UCI:
http://www.summer.uci.edu/catalog/sectionDetail.asp?serial_id=44150&acadYear=2006&acadTerm=SumSess

There’s also another course. Would this be considered part of 51 or is it 52/53 material? I would only be taking the first one (listed above), but it might help in determining if it covers everything:
http://www.summer.uci.edu/catalog/sectionDetail.asp?serial_id=44160&acadYear=2006&acadTerm=SumSess

Who do I contact to find out if I would be able to get placement and/or credit for this course? I know they have a transfer credit policy, but this course wouldn’t be finished until early September. Also, I don’t want to take it in the first place if I am going to end up having to take Math 51 over again away. What do I do? Thanks!

the first one covers part of 51 and part of 52, but its missing linear algebra and stokes/green/gauss stuff.

the second course covers part of 51 and (i think) all of 52. it’s still missing linear algebra stuff.

In other words, each course (or even both combined) is insufficient for placing out of and receiving credit for Math 51. Right?

That’s right, because Stanford’s Math 50 series spreads out linear algebra across multivariable calculus (51, 52) and differential equations (53), making it very difficult to match up with math courses elsewhere.

Go to this website to learn how to get credit for an outside course. You will have to fill out a petition form, which you can do before or after you take the class, but if you do the petition afterwards, there’s no guarantee it will count for what you want it to count for.
