The website makes it seem like you have to get an interview before February.... how do I do that?

You need to contact a local alum yourself to set up an interview. You should have received a brochure in the mail listing all of the interviewers. If not, here's a link on the CMU website that has a link to the interviewers directory.
If you look about 3/4 down the page it pulls up there is a link in red to the interviewers directory.

See if there are any alums that live near you and contact them by phone or e-mail to arrange for an interview. I interview for CMU and we welcome the opppportunity. Good luck.

Will it look bad if you don't interview?

It doesn't look bad if you don't interview, but it can potentially give you a little boost over other non-interviewing applicants if you do.

Note -- Excuse all the extra "p's" in my previous post in the word "opportunity." I guess the "p" key got stuck. :)

So CMU knows if you interviewed or not?

Yes, after an alum has an interview we fill out a form that summarizes our impressions of the applicant and what we learned about them, and we send that in to admissions. Admissions even sends us a postcard acknowledging receipt of the form. So they definitely know.

The CMU supplement also asks for the name of the alum interviewer.

My daughter arranged and had hers just before Christmas; it went very well.

Does it carry much wait? Or is it like a "oh, he's interested" thing?

do it especially if you're borderline or you feel the personal side of you lacking in the rest of your app.

i got into IS in ED1 without doing an interview but i think my personality and all that good stuff really shined through in my essays.

clearly I have already applied... can I still do an interview?

The directory is organized by CMAC interviewers living in the U.S. and abroad.
When it says, 'abroad', doesn't it mean, outside the US?
In the directory, I only see US states. What about the 'abroad' alumni? Or are there none?

Yes, "abroad" means outside the US. If you click on the Download option it will open up the entire listing, which includes alums located in other countries. For some reason the Browse option doesn't include this.

Unfortunately there are none in New Zealand :(

There are none in the UAE either. :(
