Im a rising sophomore who is interested in RSI. However, I have no research experience. Any advice? (Im interested in machine learning)
To do research in machine learning, you need to know:
-MV calc
-Discrete math
-Algorithms
-Linear algebra
@GaindalfTheWhey Do you know machine learning?
While knowing advanced math certainly helps with understanding machine learning, it is completely possible to get a working understanding without all that.
Yeah, I’d try to get research experience, if possible, just so you can know if it’s something you’re truly interested in before applying to do six weeks intensively. If you’re in a rural area, that’s understandably more difficult, and I believe RSI applications are understanding of that. However, with machine learning, it should be possible to run a project on your laptop. I’d look for online introductions to machine learning, to start. There are plenty of large datasets available to the public if you look around. You could try starting a machine learning project on one of them.
Have fun!
Additionally, I’d really recommend reading: http://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/applying_sideways
While getting into RSI is certainly a wonderful goal, I’d recommend exploring things you enjoy for the fun of it, rather than trying to just calculate what RSI readers will look for.
@kiwi18 Is it possible to learn machine learning while doing research with a professor? Basically learning on the job.
