How do I get my degrees when I owe the school, have graduated, and have run out of funds?

I am 55 years of age. I began my tenure of school at Ashford University Online in June 2009 and have completed my schooling. I ran out of money, so I can’t get a grant or loan. I owe the school, who asked me to put in a petition to graduate. I will not get my transcript until I have paid $150 and my degrees are on hold (I majored in Accounting and a minor in Information Systems) until I pay the school $2,190.30. I refused to let the fact that I was out of money deter me and I did complete. My sister also attended Ashford, but took a leave of absence when she failed a course. She was due to graduate in May 2014. I am trying to find a job so I can pay this money I owe, but have not been in the job market since 2003. I want my degrees in hand, but this money I owe is hindering me. Any suggestions of what I can do?

Sorry, there is no college I know of that will release a degree or transcript with ANY balance due. This applies equally to for-profit and not-for-profit schools. Tuition isn’t like a car loan or a mortgage - there is nothing to repo or foreclose on. The only leverage they have to receive payment is to hold diplomas and transcripts. If you want the degree you will either need to find a job and save the money to pay the school, or borrow the amount from a friend or family member.

EDIT - I have heard of some neighbor kids that had degrees/transcripts held up over $25 parking tickets and $10 library fines - it messed up one kid’s grad school application cycle.
