I was born in South America to two Asian parents, and have been living in South America for my whole life. When asked by the college app whether I was latino or hispanic, the answer was easy: I ticked yes. But then they asked how I identify myself, I am definitely not White, or Black, so should I tick Asian? Would that harm my chances of getting into a college? Especially considering the whole debate on racial discrimination in college admissions. Or should I leave it blank (question is optional)? They can see in my name I have Asian descent.
I would think that if you’re born to two Asian parents, regardless of where you’re born, you’re Asian.
My son was born in Korea. Despite is Irish first name, his Italian last name, and his New York address, he’s an American citizen who is Asian.
For the Common App, ethnicity and race are 2 different questions, both of which are entirely optional
