Hi everyone! I am currently a junior in high school. As I enter my senior year and begin the application process, I would like to have some opinion on my statistics and how to increase my chances of getting into a good school.
GPA: 3.96 unweighted (my school doesn’t have weighted GPAs anymore)
Rank: 12 out of 206
ACT: 29 (this was my first time, I plan on taking it many more times to get a 33+)
SAT: I have not taken it yet, and although people from my area do not typically take the SAT, I feel it would be helpful. Hopefully my score on that would be decent.
I participate in every instrumental music program my little school offers, including marching band (I was a featured soloist this year and I’m also the section leader for my section, making me in charge of organizing practice for my section and displaying leadership), jazz band, pep band and symphonic band. I also have participated in solo and ensemble for 2 years and have attended honor band this year and hopefully next year. I also participate in science olympiad, having joined this year. I realize not being in the activity for all 4 years of high school may look bad on a college application, but I moved from a school without this program halfway through freshman year, so it’s understandable. I am also in National Honor Society.
As far as classes go, my school only offers about 5 AP classes in total and I took AP English this year and maintained an A average. Next year my schedule includes 3 APs, so overall I would have 4 out of 5 under my belt. The only other different thing about my classes are that I taught myself French 2 over the summer so I could be in French 3 this year, since my old school did not offer French and I had to begin it my sophomore year. My old school didn’t offer Algebra 1 in 8th grade either, making me have to take it freshman year, putting me a year behind everyone else at my new school in math. To compensate, I took both Algebra 2 and Precalculus this year so I would be able to take AP Calc senior year.
More about me:
State: Ohio (the VERY rural Appalachian part near WV)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income: My parents are divorced, so my custodial parent is my mother. Her household makes 75k/year.
Ideal major: Chemical engineering
Colleges I’m hoping to apply to: Ohio State, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio University, Case Western Reserve University, NYU (Polytechnic), Stanford, University of Cincinnati and UC Berkley.
