How do I look? (For the Penn Class of 2017!)

Thank you for helping this confused junior in the college-search marathon!

My areas of interest are business, public service, and writing. Right now, both Wharton and CAS (for Annenberg’s Communication & Public Service concentration) intrigue me, though I’m leaning towards Wharton because CAS acceptance doesn’t guarantee CommPS.

With Penn’s interdisciplinary approach though, I know that both choices will provide excellent opportunities.

I’m an Asian female from a small prep school. We send 2-3 kids to Ivies each year, plus 2-3 more to Duke, Northwestern, UChicago, etc.

Unweighted GPA: 3.86 (2 B’s sophomore year, 2 B’s junior year)
Weighted class rank: 12/100
SAT: 2360
SAT II: Math 2 800, US History 780, will take Bio in May
AP: all 5’s, will take 7 AP’s by graduation
IB: English HL, but that’s it (not trying for diploma)

I know 5 other kids at my school who plan to ED to Penn - I’m a bit worried about the competition, especially since my class rank + GPA are not stellar. I’m also worried about lack of leadership/officer positions.

Business-wise, I have won at the FBLA national competition. Last year I initiated a campaign to increase membership, later adopted statewide. Besides FBLA, I intern as a receptionist for my city’s Economic Affairs Department. I also design youth marketing strategies for a volunteer organization.

Last summer, I co-authored an economics research thesis at a top 20 university. The paper was published by a well-known research journal.

The department invited me back this summer, but a local summer camp also invited me to conduct an outreach campaign - similar to the FBLA membership initiative - and quite frankly, the summer camp offer sounds more fun (and pays better!)

Writing-wise, I am a reporter for an international youth organization. Last year I was the U.S. student representative for the 50-person committee that drafted the organization’s 2011 field report. In 2010, this organization nominated me as one of its 100 most active volunteers nationwide. On the side, I also write a column for my city newspaper.

Can you assess my competitiveness for both Wharton and the College? Any additional feedback would be appreciated as well :)

Bump please! Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

I like the EC’s, not too many but you seem passionate enough in them, and they are related to what you want to do. Also, your SAT score is excellent, and your GPA, while not perfect, is still good enough. Luckily for you, you’ll be able to get a dual degree if you would like to combine your passion in Business with Writing. Interdisciplinary subjects is one of the things Penn does best out of the Ivy’s.

It’s a crapshoot for anyone, but you meet the ranges of people admitted in the past. Good luck!

If you do apply to Wharton, make sure you take calculus. If you have already taken it, good. Wharton wants people who are good at math, and you fit the bill well.

I’d say decent chances. Good ECs and academics

I’d say a pretty good chance. Spend some quality time on your essays for Penn when you apply, especially the “why Penn” essay. It really has to come from the heart. As I was telling someone at my school the other day, just wanting “any ivy league acceptance” doesn’t work. Apply to Penn because it’s Penn. :)
