I did the net price calculator to syracuse and it says I would still have around 20K left that I would need to cover. How the average student cover these cost? I don’t think I would qualify for pell grant or it may be a small amount but still 20 K is a lot of money.
Are you already accepted and planning to go to Syracuse in the fall, or are you looking at your options at where you might attend in Fall 2016? For most students, their parents pay for the amount above any financial aid given. Talk to your parents and see what they are willing to contribute. If they are not going to help, you will have to consider a less expensive school, or possibly a community college. If you have good SAT/ACT and good grades, a possible merit scholarship could be available from other schools (check this forum for the thread listing schools that offer merit.)
Parent and student savings, current income, loans, and commuting from home or community college.
Are you saving your summer job earnings?
Which forum are you referring too? I do not see a link and thank you for the quick reply.
Thanks for the reply and I got some thinking to do. And I do not want to go to a community college.

If you qualified for a Pell Grant, that would have already been figured into the aid shown on the NPC.
What are your parents saying? How much will THEY pay each year?
Are your parents low income?
What are your stats?
What is your home state?

My GPA is a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.475 weighted. I am in a magnet program for sciences and mathematics. My ACT was a 27.

You need to study and retest…and take the SAT as well. For you to get enough merit to have little residual costs, you’ll need higher scores.
Community colleges could be your safety schools
I have question. What if I apply for schools that I am overqualified for? Will that greatly increase my chances for receiving a large amount of aid or is that not a valuable option?
Read the links in this thread.
I would strongly suggest you retake that ACT, or take the SAT. It will increase your chances of receiving merit aid to get a higher score.
What is your parent able to contribute to college costs annually?
At the moment I am expect $2,000 a max a year. I have a question about retaking the ACT. I would have to retake the ACT in September. Thats not too late to have everything submitted for colleges by December? I only say December because I want to have everything in before January. And thanks for the link
Are you looking for merit base scholarships or need base financial aid? If you “overqualified”, you may have better chance for to be admitted and qualify for merit base scholarships.
The Sept ACT will get everything in time for ED, and def for RD deadlines.
Looking more based on merit scholarships but I definitely have financial need as well. I don’t know how guaranteed merit scholarships from HBCU are but I do know I qualify for a few. I think I qualify for a full ride to JSU(Jackson State University); however, I do not know if these scholarships are automatic or based on availability? Does anyone have any experience or know anyone who has gotten merit scholarships from HBCU and how competitive they are? Thanks for all the help guys.
@Dennis101 did you read the links in the thread I posted above? There is one for guaranteed full tuition and full ride scholarships. Guaranteed means that everyone with those stats gets the awards. See what you qualify for. There are some HBCU on the list.
The September ACT or SAT is fine for applications submitted by December 1. You need to get your applications submitted before December 1 for most of the merit awards on that list. NOT January…December. Actually before Thanksgiving would be even better.
All the fall exams (Sept, Oct, Nov…and even Dec) are fine for Dec submissions in most cases. You’re not applying ED. But even if you were, typically Sept and Oct exams are fine.
don’t know why you’re worried about Sept exam being too late.
You really need to retest…take Sept and Oct exams…and take the SAT as well.

for need based aid? probably not because those schools likely wouldn’t have much/any aid to give.
. however, for merit based aid, that could help but only at schools that give HUGE awards (more than free tuition).

Right, but according to the Syracuse results your bigger problem is an unaffordable “expected family contribution”
I think you are right. I got my mom to help fill out the net price calculator with me. Her amounts she put in were not 100% exact; however, they were pretty close. I may qualify for more need base aid when we feel out the fafsa form. And I will begin looking at universities that offer large merit aids for my scores. Thanks for the reply.
I will take a look again. I may have missed it. It had a lot of great information.

I think you misunderstand. The NPC already includes any aid you’d get from filling out FAFSA.
Oh ok. I was saying that I may get more aid when I fill out the fafsa form because my mom put in rough estimates like rounding up instead of the exact values. And what does Residual COA mean when looking at scholarships? example: Prairie View A&M University
Award: Full Ride (Tuition, Fees, Room, Books)
Residual COA: $5,324/year
Requirements: 3.5 GPA, 1760 SAT (CR+M+W) or 26 ACT (including W)
Award: Full Tuition+ ($9,200/year + OOS Tuition Waiver)
Residual COA: $9,526/year
Requirements: 3.25 GPA, 1650 SAT (CR+M+W) or 24 ACT (including W)
