So, I emailed my roommate and this is what he said

“I am looking forward to meeting you soon. Since I havent really seen the size of the room, I cant tell exactly what i will be buying to bring to the dorm. But as of now i will be bringing basic items for first couple of days and then we can figure out what other items we need. Thanks”

My parents won’t let me bring a TV because they think I will abuse it. And I don’t want to move in on the first day and find out he can’t come back to bring the TV. So, how do I properly ask him to bring a TV and he knows why I can’t bring one?

Offer to pay for the fridge/microwave/whatever else and then say, “Since I will be paying for X, Y, Z I think it would be fair if you brought a T.V. Does that seem fair to you? Let me know if you have any problems with that”.

Just ask him straight up… Say “My parents won’t let me bring a TV freshman year. Was wondering if you were bringing one? If so I could bring my Xbox/PS3/DVDs, etc.”

“Hey man, wanna bring a TV? I’d bring mine but I can’t because my parents are crazy and think I’ll spend too much time on it. If you want I can get you a fridge or sth else though.”

I agree that is a good idea to just be direct, but I would make sure you are making it a fair deal by offering to purchase a different big ticket item, and I would make sure your roommate does not feel obligated since tvs are expensive and you really don’t NEED one-- you dont want to put your roommate in an awkward position if they can’t afford it or if their parents won’t pay for wants vs needs-- the only reason I have a tv is because we have a spare in the house, my parents would never have spent money on something like that. It would just be nice to have and your parents aren’t going for it, so if they are into the idea it would be great if they could bring it.
