I just got an e-mail that I “won” $6 million and all I have to do is e-mail this guy (presumably I’ll then be asked for a bank account No. and/or other personal information).

This annoys me greatly and I’m sure other people have fallen prey to the scam. How do I report it?

Go to your state’s government website. Search to see if they have a specific place to report such e-mails.

If not, there should be a link for the Attorney General’s office. There’s often a Consumer Protection office. You can forward the e-mail to them.

In addition to AG office, check if you can report this to your e-mail provider so such scams can be filtered out in the future. My e-mail provider has a “Report Fraud” feature, and I forward such e-mails to that address.

Report spam to spam@uce.gov and abuse @ your internet provider.

Here’s one more thing you can do if you’ve got lots of time and patience :)

Depending on your email client, there should be a way to view all header information of the email. On Yahoo webmail, for example, you can view full headers by clicking on the “Standard Headers” pulldown list.

Look at the last IP address in the “received from” list. There might be dozens of IP addresses, and spammers often bounce off unsuspecting servers, but this is the best shot you have of identifying them.

Cut and paste that last IP address into a WHOIS search engine, such as the one at networksolutions.com

The IP address should resolve to an ISP. Cut and paste the full headers, and forward that header text plus the spam email to the ISP’s abuse email address (normally abuse@xxxx.com or fraud@xxxx.com where xxxx is the name of the ISP)

Just for other readers of this thread, I got a fake PayPal email, recognized it and reported it to PayPal. I did not click on anything on the fake email. My “reward” from PayPal is that they closed my account. I was not allowed to open another account until they *mailed *me a form that I had to *mail *back… The result of my dutifully reporting the fake email was being locked out of my account for weeks.
