Chances at HYPS, Georgetown, U. of Chicago, UCB, USC, WUSTL, NYU (Stern), Wharton

Along with my chances, can you tell me the pros and cons of me as an applicant…And is there anything I can do this summer or next year to improve my chances

Utah doesn’t send that many to elite east coast schools so you have an advantage there.
Your have a strong GPA and look to have a very demanding schedule
Your SATS are only average by College Confidental Standards.
Your ECs are genaric.
Your AP scores are a bit on the low end.

HYPS - reach
Georgetown -slight reach
Chicago - slight reach (write a good essay)
Berkley - reach (out of state)
WUSTL - reach (match ED if you visit)
NYU - reach
Wharton -reach

Good Luck!

Your SATs are not in range for many of your schools. We need to know class rank for your GPA to be put in context. Basically I’d say no chance at HYP and Wharton. Weak ECs combined with low SATs and being Asian would make them pretty much impossible. USC and Georgetown are closest to being a match.

Alright thanks…But what would be considered a strong ECs and how high would I need to get my SATs up for HYPS. Does being asian really hurt my chances that much. What about U. of Chicago.

Also about my class rank, I would assume I would be in the top 10 spots in my class, because the students that take the most rigorous course are in the IB program, and i’ve seen most of the students GPAs, and there are jsut a few that managed an UW GPA of 4.0, so I guess I would be top 10 or 5.

how are you an IB diploma candidate with only 6 IB courses total?

^I don’t get what you mean…your suppose to have 3 SLs and 3 HLs, so thats six. But HLs are 2 years long, so I guess that can count as 6 classes for HL, other than that i don’t get what you mean, unless you mean TOK, I didn’t include that…Can you explain what you mean

UCB: Slight Reach (out of state)

Anyother insight…What else can I do

I must say, being from Utah definitely can’t hurt. Speaking personally, I applied to three of the schools on your list with SAT’s more than 100 pts. less, and I did fine, I mean obviously there are so many variables that it’s impossible to really define any set of odds for about, oh, your whole list ;), none the less, don’t let that get you, people had seen my list, and they were like you’re crazy with scores like yours how do you expect to get in. So really, it’s pretty ridiculous to ask for odds since schools are all looking for different things. i’ll give you a very brief story, there’s a girl in my school, I’ll be honest, her personality’s not a thin slice of heaven but I can’t deny that she is intelligent. She got accepted to Columbia but waitlisted at Lehigh, so yeah, colleges are ridiculously unpredictable, so good luck, and oh yeah, perhaps may I suggest holding down a part-time job during the school year as opposed to only having one during the summer, just a thought, schools like to see kids who can wear many hats.

Tonyt, you realize that she probably got waitlisted at Lehigh, BECAUSE she was applying to Columbia right?

^So do colleges know what other colleges your applying to

Anyother thoughts

Many of them do explicitly ask, however, the bigger tip off was probably that she had taken SAT IIs. Lehigh does not ask for SAT IIs, so…

The consensus is to put down schools in the same league of the college you are applying to.
