Okay so I’m a college sophomore studying Chemistry with an emphasis in forensics and during my school breaks at home I work at teen clothing store (Tillys if anyone is curious). During one of my shifts, I met this really nice lady and we ended up talking about what I wanted to do after college and I told her about my dream job at a nearby forensics lab at the police department and it just so happens that this woman’s father in law was basically a big deal with the police department and she gave me her husband’s business card and told me to keep in touch so I’m working on my email to her husband but I’m not sure how word everything so that I don’t come off negatively. So what do I put in the subject line, do I talk about myself and then explain how I got his info or the other way around? I haven’t done anything like this so any advice would be helpful!
Thanks!
Dear (rank) Lastnsme,
Hello! I’m Firstname Lastname , and I got your business card from your wife. I am a college sophomore at Schoolname University studying chemistry, and forensics, and she thought you might be able to advise me about getting into a career in (state your interests).
I would appreciate it if you could spare some time with me over coffee to discuss my classes, internships, and other ways to prepare to work in the field. A more specific question if you have one.
Sincerely,
FirstName Lastname

^^ Excellent. Maybe “your wife gave me your card when we got to talking at the store where I work.”
