How do I tell if I'm not going to be hired?

I applied for a job in a research lab at my school, and got an interview (the entire process, including the interview, was very informal). The “interview” went fairly well (hard to tell because it was so informal), I got a tour of the lab and everything, and the interactions I had with other researchers went well. During the interview, the lab manager mentioned that a sophomore had also applied but since I was a freshman I would be given preference (they want us to work until we’re seniors). Right before I left, the researcher told me another freshman had sent in an application, but they would probably take me because I was a “good fit”.

That all sounds great but…

On Monday, I sent them an update on my ability to find housing for the summer (because they asked me to), but the reply I got was that they told me that they were interviewing another candidate and “would let me know” what they decide (no time table).

What do I make of this situation? I feel like they don’t actually want me despite what they said and are just trying to find another candidate and keep me as an option in case they cannot. (I have a strong GPA but no work experience)

Is there any follow up I can do to ask what their decision was and anything I can add in that letter to improve my “application” (ie, how could I say really want this job, I will work hard, it would definitely be a highlight of my undergrad career, what they’re researching is interesting/relevant to me, etc.)? If yes when/how?

Thanks!

They told you exactly what the situation is. They are interviewing another candidate and will let you know when they’ve made a decision.

If you follow up, please don’t make it about you (this area is interesting to YOU, it would be a highlight for YOU). That’s not compelling. Make it about what you can do for THEM. Good luck.

You’ll know when they make a decision. Please do NOT ask them “so, what was your decision.”

@pizzagirl
I definitely didn’t intend to ask it like that haha

The follow up did not have to be about me necessarily, I was looking for possible ways to where I could follow up. If you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated!

Also, would be a sign that they don’t want me? I never got a response post-interview like this one, but I have also applied to many labs and some I never heard back from. It’s honestly really discouraging

Bump. More opinions would be appreciated!

Also, how long do I wait before I can conclude they no longer want me? I have heard of people who send out applications and don’t get a response at all…

I am a recruiter and I know how frustrating this can be. I would suggest - send an email to the hiring manager and ask them if they could give you a timeline from when the decision is to be made. I would tell them that you are starting to look into housing for the summer and would like to make arrangements to stay on campus as soon as possible. It really can not hurt to ask.

I also wouldn’t yet read anything into the fact that they’re interviewing someone else.

Be patient. The process is horrible, but be patient. And I think ahsmuoh’s suggestion above about what to ask is a good one.
