How do I tell my organization I am transferring schools?

Hi, I am a member of a professional business fraternity in a small state school in Wisconsin and was admitted to Wisconsin Madison as a transfer into their business program. My business fraternity is a close group. I am transferring because the academic environment is more competitive, Madison offers more opportunities, and my dream employers recruit there and not at my current school. Plus, it was my dream school from the start. I did not know if I was going to get in so I rushed my fraternity here (I am an “Active” member/initiated) and I have visited Madison’s fraternity chapter and fit in with the culture and people there.

How do I tell my current fraternity I am going to transfer? I have already made my decision and don’t want to make people feel betrayed and want to maintain the relationships I have built in my current chapter. Do I email? Tell a few people and make an announcement in front of 70 people at our weekly meeting? I have no idea how they will take it and I hope they see it as me trying to progress and have good career opportunities.

If they really are your ‘brothers’ they’ll be happy for you. Those that aren’t, you’re better off without.

Not sure the best way, it’s really depends on your personal situation.

Congrats on Madison!
