How Do I Turn Off the Latest Facebook Madness?

Everyone should get familiar with the account and privacy settings and how to use custom groups to limit what is seen and received. Find your settings under the home drop down. Go into each and click all the way through every time there is a choice, click it so see the options. When you have a choice to set up who sees what, select custom and restrict who sees posts. I created custom groups and one is just immediate family, one is family and close friends. Those are the only ones that see the posts about family events. Things can get spread around with tagging, so go into the tagging settings and limit to the max if you wish. Check out the apps settings to check and make sure you are not allowing apps to share. Then as others have said, when you post anything, select who sees it with the right hand drop down, which is where you can also unsubscribe to people and quit seeing anything they post. You do not have to unfriend them. Facebook has made the whole process harder since they get revenue with broad sharing. The tools are there to limit without bowing out.

But if you want to get rid of your account, the request to do so is under account setting, security tab.

Icedragon is incorrect - if you unsubscribe from Mary, you won’t see any more of Mary’s posts. But you are still listed as her friend, and if she wants to come and comment on your wall or your posts, she can do so (unless you block her). I have to confess, I have a few FB friends who are SO prolific that I’ve unsubscribed from them, and I forget they are even on my FB until they comment on my posts. I don’t comment on theirs, since I don’t see them.
