how do I write a personal statement?

im so lost. Do I write about my accomplishments or do I write about soothing that happened in my life? Im applying to cabrini, york, chestnut hill, kutztown, and stockton

This depends on the school and the prompt they give you

there were no prompts. like york said We welcome the opportunity to learn more about you. You may use the space below to share a personal statement with us.

Well, then, if you are really lost, then you could probably look at the prompt of some other college essays/personal statements and try to glimpse what they want. Of course you shouldn’t write your essay wholly based on the other college’s prompt but it can give you some ideas.

What I’ve heard is that you should generally try to write a story. Pick something life-changing or deceptively ordinary or just something you’ve learned something from and write it in two parts:

 1. What happened
 2. What you learned

For colleges without a prompt, you can use one of the Common App prompts and your respective essay. Be sure to provide the prompt along with the essay. Most colleges are fine with that.

There are simply no rules like what you ‘heard’. You should consider what you would like them to know about you. The UC statement is pretty comprehensive and could be used as a general prompt if you find inspiration in answering all or part of this:

Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.

and the second prompt could work too:

Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?

Basically you are free to say what it is you would like them to know about you, that you think is relevant and appropriate to your attractive qualities as a deep thinker, a leader or whatever you think you will be contributing to the college community.

Try getting your hands on as many sample essays as possible. Not to copy them of course, but to see what others have done and what worked/didn’t work. This should help orient you a bit.
