How do letters of recommendation work?

do i ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation now even if i dont plan on going to grad school for another 5 years? or do i track the guy down 5 years from now and ask then? i feel like eve made a pretty good impression this semester, so ideally id like to ask while im fresh on the professor’s mind.

Ask him to write it now and keep it on file.

Just note that professional letters of recommendation will carry more weight than academic ones (especially considering the time frame).

But won’t admins look at the date and be like, this was student X five years ago… lots can change in five years…

Just keep in touch with this prof and if you need one in the future, just ask him when the time comes.

But then he won’t remember the details. If you really want a letter from this guy, despite the legitimate concerns brought up by VW and PP, then ask him to write it now.
