Hello everyone,
I’m just curious what everyone thinks of my chances. I’m a rising senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va.
My scores are as follows:
SAT:
R: 750
M: 800
W: 670

SAT IIs:
Math II: 800
Biology M: 750
Chemistry: 800
US History: 790
Physics: 760

My GPA is 4.301 (weighted) 3.869 (unweighted)

I am going to be a three year officer in the Model UN club at my school, which is the largest in the club. Next year I will be vice president in the club.

Additionally I am a member of the Drama club, and I am a critic for the local awards program (Cappies). Next year will be my third year as a mentor in my school’s Big Sibs program, and I have had a job since the end of my sophomore year.

I’m really hoping to go to MIT or UPenn, and maybe Princeton or Columbia. What do you think my chances are?

I can see the ECs needing work, but I disagree with the SAT Reasoning. I think 1550/1600 is really good, and a 2220 is definitely above average for ivies. I personally think MIT is a stretch, but my stats and GPA are on par for Princeton and UPenn, especially ED Penn. I have a lot of friends who had weaker of both and got into both.

For the schools you listed, I don’t think a 2200 is even higher the 50th percentile. Its obvious that your M + CR score is excellent, but since you’re not applying to Georgetown, the 670 in Writing brings you down quite a bit.

I agreed with billabongboy. I almost have the same sat and satII score as puliceman, but a bit lower gpa cause I didn’t take many AP classes. I have friends got in ivy, cal tech. Their scores are very high on everything. Plus your EC not impressive to make you stand out. Save your application fee, unless you re-take sat1 and get pass 2300

For MIT and Princeton, your SAT is a bit below par. UPenn is competitive, but I’d argue that you have a solid shot there. The same with Columbia.

I also find that you lack a bit in your extra-curriculars; is there anyway to beef them up while doing something you enjoy?

I mean I’m going to take it again in October because I don’t need any more SAT IIs and I have the time. I mean last year I did an online Aerospace course run by NASA for college credit, and I’m going to do another NASA online learning community this year. I forgot to mention that I’ll be in NHS next year and I was a Biology Olympiad Semifinalist. The thing is that Model UN is literally the biggest club at TJ, with over 200 people participating over the year, so it’s one step down from being class president. Maybe that’d give you a better sense.

I go to puliceman92’s school, and from his username, I’m pretty sure I can identify him. Despite his seemingly lackluster ECs and SAT scores, puliceman92 did exceptionally well in terms of college acceptances. This is an example of the unpredictability of college admissions and why chance threads should be taken lightly. Congrats puliceman92
