how do online practice tests correspond to actual score??

My son is going to be taking the ACT for the 1st time. I do NOT understand the scoring at ALL. Just wondering if he’s going to do okay or bomb it. Out of 214 questions - he got 178 right. Is that good? bad? awful? He got 36/40 on the Science section so that seemed good to me - but how might that correspond to an actual score if he did similarly on the real test.

Any help or explanations appreciated.

Ruth

i could probably help you figure it out if you posted how many he missed in the other sections

He got:

Reading 33/40
Math 48/59
Science 36/40
English 61/75

Thanks for any help in understanding this. This was the practice test on the ACT site.

Ruth

With scores like that he is definitely not “bombing” the test.

Of course, your definition of bomb may be different than someone else’s.

Based on the scoring chart in the real ACT book, practice test 1:

Reading 33/40 = 30
Math 48/59 = 28
Science 36/40 = 30
English 61/75 = 25

Of course that doesn’t correlate exactly because it is a different test from the one he took, but it should be fairly accurate to give you an idea of how he’s doing. You might want to have him take a test out of that book and grade it using the included chart to get a really precise practice score.

You may also want to look at this page, which gives you percentile rankings for ACT subsection scores:

<a href=“ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT”>ACT Test Scores | ACT Scoring | ACT;

that would be a composite of 28
