Im planning on applying to cornell ED to CAS for CS or Econ. So I got a 640 on Math II. I have no idea how, I finished calc AB and got 680+ in barrons. I think I probably skipped a question and bubbled in one down. Also, I got a 5 on all my AP tests except calc (4). Is it gonna appear that im bad at math? I have a 780 in world history, I know theres 2 tests required. Should I pay the late fee and take another subject test in October? (however I have trouble paying). Or should I just send it hoping for the best?
subject tests are generally not as paid attention to. However if you feel the need to retake then thats fine
I would recommend applying with what you have. I’m a current freshmen in arts and sciences and I actually didn’t take any subject tests. If they can admit someone who didn’t take them, I’m sure they can admit you. Plus, Cornell is an amazing school and applying on time for early decision is a great idea!
It’s important to remember that the tests aren’t the reason most people get in. You have to stand out against other applicants through other ways. I would recommend trying to show Cornell more about you and why Cornell is the perfect place for you to study. Be specific and genuine!
As a sophomore in CS at Cornell, I would tentatively agree with @Mickayla39. When it comes to more math-oriented fields like CS or econ, your performance in mathematics is important. However, because CAS gives the option of “Undecided” when applying, SAT II’s are not as important as your SAT I/ACT or your HS grades.
But when it comes down to it, your essays will be at least as important as your grades. You really need to set yourself apart from the other candidates, and genuinely sell yourself as unique, fit for Cornell.
For CAS, 2 subject tests are required, doesn’t matter if you are submitting ACT or SAT, whereas other colleges (not a Cornell school) do not require subject tests if submitting ACT. https://admissions.cornell.edu/sites/admissions.cornell.edu/files/2017-2018%20Freshman%20Req.%20Chart_4.pdf
If you want to be a CS or econ major, 640 for Math II is quite low, to be very blunt. Aside from admission to Cornell, you may want to consider if you will be successful in those 2 majors.
If you are considering other top schools for CS and Econ, your math II score may be an issue.
Would putting undecided on my application have any negative effect in admissions for CAS?
What about your ECs and essays? Are they geared to CS or Econ. I had 2 kids who graduated from CAS, and it was very apparent that one kid was a STEM student and another was a humanities student, their test scores also supported that.
Most of my ECs and Essays are geared towards social studies and humanities, although I have one CS related award but it is connected to history. For example, I’m in Model UN and
interact club.
You should apply to CAS as undecided.
Ok but do admissions officers view that negatively, because it might seem that i’m indecisive?
I wouldn’t think so because you are supposed to spend first 2 years to figure out what you want to major in. You may want to pick a non STEM major if you want to pick a major.
thank you
I took it again and got an 790. How would this drastic change look to the admissions committee? These tests were barely a month apart.
