I’m a bit distressed, because I know that college applications get sent off during your senior year and thus the college won’t see your senior year performance. For me this is a bit of a dilemma; freshman-sophomore year I took only regular classes. Junior year I was approved to transfer from the regular English track into IB English HL, along with IB History of the Americas HL. That year is good for my admission because I went from having Bs in the regular courses freshman-sophomore year to getting a 4.0 junior year with IB courses. However I only had three, counting TOK. In senior year I will have 6-7 IB classes which I’m positive I will do well at, but I’m scared that the UCs I am applying to won’t be able to see them and it’s likely to be my most impressive academic year of HS. My SAT wasn’t horrible (1880) but could be improved next year. I’m really hoping that my courses and improvement from regular classes and lower GPA to difficult classes and a very high GPA will help me out, so senior year grades and course load are going to carry lots of weight in my admission. So I’m wondering if the UCs (the ones I’m interested in are San Diego, Santa Barbara, Irvine and Berkely, although UCB I know is quite a reach for me) will be able to look at my senior year? At the very least my first semester or just the schedule?

You need to calculate your UC GPA using only your 10-11th grade a-g courses, see link: <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
The UC’s will look at your Senior year class rigor but grades will not be included in their admission decisions. They do not ask for Mid-year grades, so your UC GPA will not get any higher. The UC’s will see the upward trend on your grades and your increased rigor for your Junior which will help. Do you plan to retake your SAT??? It is below average for the UC’s you are interested in.

Yes, I am retaking my SAT this October. I am going to try to bump the composite up to 2000+, but even in the 1900+ range I should be fine. I think I’ll do better on the ACT. I don’t know the averages for SD or SB, but I do know that for Irvine I am above average. The average for Irvine is 1867. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/irvine/freshman-profile/

According to collegeboard.org though, all of my scores are within the middle 50% and pretty close to the 75th percentile (at least for SD and Irvine, which are the ones I really want to go to anyway), so my current SAT isn’t really ‘too low’ or anything like that.

The reality is that a 1900, if you are in-state is what the Cal States are seeing. The UC’s are admitting higher SAT scores.

Then I guess the reality is that I will need to bump up my SAT score.

According to your link Gumbymom, I have a UC GPA of 4.04. Is that below average?

A UC GPA of 4.04 is on target for UCSB and UCI. Slightly below average for UCSD and UCB. If you can bump your SAT up to 2000 or higher, you are in good shape. Good Luck.

I really want to get into UCI, the others are kind of reaches, but I will definitely try to bump up my SAT. Thanks!

whoops, I miscalculated it. Accidentally included freshman year. The actual one is 4.17.

I also forgot that I did take an honors course in tenth grade.
