How do undergraduate college scholarships work?

I’m a senior and I’m going to be applying to colleges soon, but I’m wondering how I can apply for scholarships. Is it a competitive procedure or do I just need to find scholarships?

You need to start at the beginning. Read here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1678699-links-to-popular-financial-aid-info-threads.html#latest

The VAST majority of the best scholarships are those offered by the school. There are some highly competitive full tuition scholarships out there but very hard to get. Many times those consider whether your family is low income. In all cases your academic record is important (GPA and scores). Talk to your Guidance Counselor about what scholarships may be available through your school and local organizations.

SAT is okay (2190), and my GPA had been in the low 4’s weighted.

We need more info.

Are you looking for scholarships to help pay for 4 years of college? If so, then you need to apply to the SCHOOLS that give them for YOUR stats. Not likely for USC or Emory.

Outside awards won’t likely help you. They’re usually small, for only frosh year, and hard to win…plus, they’ll get applied to “need” first.

Are your parents expecting you to win scholarships to help cover their cost? If so, then you need a different strategy.

How much will your family pay?

What schools are your financial safeties?

^^Yes, do you know your financial ‘need’? Do you know your stats compared to the rest of the student body where you are applying? I do know low income kids that got full aid at USC with your stats but that was because they were truly needy with FAFSA EFC of 0. They did not get scholarships, they got need aid. They had only to contribute work study and a student loan. What is your situation?
