How do you deal with frustration?

I’m currently seeing a psychologist about this issue but I want input from the CC community. I go through bouts where I get so frustrated about not being able to do my schoolwork when I’m not able to do anything except to think about every negative issue that comes to mind. This includes that I’m not good enough to do my work or being able to talk to anyone. I try to take a break but then I get more frustrated because I realized that I’m losing time to do my work. Of course, it doesn’t help that the people who can help me have office hours a week from now and my available friends are either too stupid or too smart to help me and frustrate me more.

So I’ve been throwing things and screaming and crying and banging against the wall. I know that it doesn’t make sense for me to do this but my frustration is clouding most of my judgement and so what else can someone do about this?

Have you thought about seeing a psychiatrist and trying an anti-anxiety medication, at least temporarily? I have done that myself this year, due to dealing with the mental illness of my two sons, as well as trying to run a struggling business. Before I started on the low-dose medication, I would lay awake at night, with negative thoughts zinging through my head. Now I’m able to see things a little more clearly and don’t stay worried all of the time.

From your second paragraph, I really think you should check into this possibility.

It’s not that I’m anxious all the time, but when I deal with very hard material in my schoolwork, work that’s supposed to be struggled through. I have friends who have taken that kind of medication and that has messed them up severely and I will do it as a last resort.
