How Do You Deal With Test Score "Setbacks"?

I thought I was smart. My SAT, SAT IIs, and ACT scores tell me differently and I don’t know how to deal with it. After seeing my scores, I feel hopeless, dumb, and worthless.

I have a 96% average with a decent number of honors and AP classes. My school does practice some grade inflation, but my GPA puts me in the top 10% of my class (we do not have a class rank, but the school awards that I got tell me that I am in the top 10%).

However, I only got these scores on my standardized tests:
PSAT (October 2012): 58 CR, 61 M, 54 W
SAT (May 2012): 540 CR, 580 M, 610 W, 10 E (Yeah a decrease from PSAT)
ACT (April 2012): 25 E, 25 M, 23 R, 23 S, 23 E/W, 7 E
SAT II (June 2011): 680 World History

It did help me when I was delusional and decided that it would be a great idea to take SAT II Chemistry and SAT II French yesterday as a regular Chemistry student and honors French student. It didn’t turn out too well. I think I got 400’s on both. I’m serious.

And all of this is kind of depressing me. I think it is because most of my class don’t even attempt SAT IIs and don’t even care about their test scores. I feel worse when I care about my test scores when no one else does. Not even my parents care and they’re Asian. They say that I can just go to community college. It’s so frustrating. And because my friends and family don’t care, they think I am crazy to try to retake and stress over these test scores.

I am torn. I am lost. I don’t want to settle for a bad college or get no scholarships, because I can see myself doing better. But I don’t know where to start without being upset about my past test scores.

CC can have this effect on you when everyone is flaunting their scores but you have to realize that CC harbors some of the best students in the nation. Your 1730 SAT score is still about 200 points above the national average.

Having said that, it’s not the end of the world. What year in high school are you. If you’re a rising junior you have plenty of time to raise those scores. Did you prepare at all for the SAT or ACT? If you didn’t you have the potential to increase your score dramatically. A score of 2k on the SAT is certainly doable with enough motivation. For the subject tests, it’s kinda your own fault for not reviewing beforehand.

My main advice I can give is don’t let CC daunt you; use it. CC has probably been my primary resource since I found it this year and I wish I had found it sooner.

Don’t worry, you can use this summer to study for the SAT and retake it in October. Especially if you didn’t study the first time, you have much that you can improve on. No one gets good scores without prep, not even overachievers on CC. Study for your subject tests also and give them a retake in Nov. or find 2 other subjects that you are better at. Best of luck my man and dont settle for a community college. You should at least shoot for a top 50 school.

Don’t let the test define you. I posted a question in the parent forum recently about my daughters low test scores. Your scores are higher than hers, but the anxiety is the same. Several people posted encouraging posts and helpful advice.

My daughter is in a ACT test prep class. She’s improved her composite score 6 points during the class and looks forward to the real test on Saturday. She has never had goals of attending an Ivy league school, but the scholarship money that is based on the score would be very helpful.

I recommend that you study the big red ACT prep book. Take the test as often as you can, and try to ignore the nearly perfect scores that everyone on CC brags about. They are the exception, not the norm in the real world. You’ll be fine!

Should I cancel my SAT II’s or just apply to schools that allow score choice?
