How do you deal with the cold, long, dark and depressing winters?

I live in Illinois and I actually really like having a balance between warm summers and cold winters. it gives life a variety throughout the year. the first day of snow is actually pretty exciting. also, the snow makes christmas/winter feel like christmas/winter. without it, christmas/winter would feel bare!! also, the cold weather allows for sledding, skiing, and warm drinks! also, winter is not always slushy and disgusting-like. some days, the outside is actually very pretty and pristine, especially when all of the snow on the roads is shoveled and the snow blankets over the grass and the trees.
i, personally, do not want to go down south because of the lack of coldness there. but hopefully if you do go to michigan you will gradually like the cold weather, or at least accept it.

it actually gets pretty cold here in texas…just no snow. its pretty nasty to be honest haha. it was around 28 just 2 days ago. we had about an hour of snow and then it just turned gross.

Lifelong Midwest resident here, subject to winter blues. Other posters are right about vitamins and sun lamps. My tips are: 1. Don’t bypass UMich just because of crummy weather; it’s a great school. 2. When you DO get a sunny day in winter, even if it’s brutally cold, DO get outside. Just bundle up with layers, heavy gloves, and good boots, and go for a walk. Sun rays and activity help recharge your energy and attitude to get you through drearier days to come. And if your schedule doesn’t permit a walk in the sun, then go at sunset. I think Midwestern winter sunsets are often heartbreakingly beautiful and vastly underrated. 3. Long hot baths in bright lights.

It was sunny today.

I get use to the cold after about a few weeks of cold days. The sub zero days are the ones that get me though.

I love winter just because I love to snowboard. What I hate is the late fall when it is cold, but still raining. I just want it to snow!!!

This New Zealand Uni seems to be much cheaper than UCLA. It might be better choice.

Tips from another sad sufferer: 1. Sublingual B complex - liquid form. Huge difference. 2. Take vitamin D daily, at least 1000 u 3. Tablespoon flax oil daily 4. Moderate tanning bed useage – very moderate, eg 10 min, but a few times a week after a workout at gym makes a huge difference.
Believe it or not there was a time I could not enjoy long winter walks in the beautiful snow. Now life would not be complete without them. Master your responses to weather now while you’re young and you’ll be unstoppable wherever life takes you ; )

^^^Fantastic advice kmccrindle!

Haha, I know what you mean. I live about 30 minutes outside of Ann Arbor and we seriously have miserable winters. I spent the weekend with my friend who goes to U-M, and just walking downtown was freezing…without any snow or wind. But don’t overlook Michigan because of the weather, just accept it. Ann Arbor is so pretty when it snows :)

hypocondriacts hahah
I hate winter too, but the summers make it worth it. too bad u of m oos kids miss it!

oh did you know it went down to -20 F for a night last year? :P

omg -20!!! that sounds sooo amazing

That was likely with windchill, but I’m not surprised, sometimes that happens once or twice.

First real snow of the year tonight! Now I have to decide if I can get away with wearing boots to an interview tomorrow morning. I don’t think my dress shoes will make it from EQ to the alumni center if it stays this wet out.

good luck w/the interview!! how much is it supposed to snow?

Thanks. It’s not going to snow much, I think it’s actually turned to rain now so by tomorrow it will likely be puddles. Which is great, because my snow boots can almost go with professional attire-- almost, but my rainboots are navy blue and have little fishies on them. Oh well.

Though apparently tomorrow night it’s going well below freezing and it could snow any day this week. Peachy.

no it was not the wind chill, that was the crazy part. It was a freak high pressure system from upper canada that brought -20 and windchills to -40. I sprayed a squirt bottle outside and the mist crystalized it was awesome

This was in SE Michigan? When on earth was that? O.O

I dont remember the date, if you’re really wondering check the record low archives

Here’s what a freshman from California said about the big snow storm hitting Madison right now–they got a snow day>

"Heck ya!!!

People were going nuts around here last night. Snowball fights were breaking out all over the place and cops started getting involved because I guess people were hitting cars. Overall a great time last night though

For todays festivities I expect to see everyone on Bascom for the campus wide fight haha. I love Madtown. "

Two things will help you get through winter and maybe even learn to enjoy it.

First: Buy the warmest clothes available. Pay special attention to feet -get really warm boots and thick wool socks with liners. Banish cotton from your wardrobe - Blue jeans are the worst in the cold but if you must wear them, do it with long underwear underneath.

Second: Get involved in a winter sport like Cross Country Skiing or Snowshoeing. Probably there is a student club devoted to this. You will be amazed how warm you will get doing these activities as while enjoying the surrounding winter beauty.
