How do you decide a major if you're mediocre at everything???

I’m not kidding when I say that I can’t decide what to major in. I got destroyed in AP Chem so I know i’m not doing chem. I did decent on AP Euro and APUSH. (B/B B/A) I got destroyed one semester in calc (C/B) and currently i’m taking calc bc, APES and AP Spanish 4. Also, if you go undeclared don’t you have to know at least what field you’re going undeclared in? If I do that will it cause me to have to take additional years in college or will it not impact it significantly? I liked bio honors but people say that AP Bio made them hate biology so I don’t know if I should go undeclared in bio sciences. Helpp please

if this will help:
AP scores: calc ab:4, chem:2…, apush 4, ap euro 4

There are lots of majors in college that are not ordinarily high school subjects like philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geology, etc…

However, many subjects do require other subjects as support courses (e.g. biology majors have to take general chemistry and organic chemistry, although some schools offer a less rigorous version compared to the version for chemistry majors).

@ucbalumnus Regarding those subjects (philosophy, sociology, anthropology, geology) I heard it’s difficult to get a job if you major in these specific ones. What’s your opinion? Also, are there any pre-reqs for the UC’s if I go undeclared in life sciences?

Here’s some context on why I’m so conflicted. My father passed away near the end of my freshmen year. He was a computer science major but I find no interest in that. My mom is only earning a little above the minimum wage right now because she used to be a homekeeper prior to my father’s death. (My father was one of those “I’ll take care of everything types”) So basically my mom knows nothing about college nor technology so I have to help her with a lot of things. My brother is majoring in English which is good for him because he’s always loved English and he’s getting scholarships and grants. Thing is, I was more affected by my father’s death because it was before the years that mattered for UC’s: sophomore and junior year. I barely have any EC’s and I’m mediocre at everything so my outlook is ehhhhh. I want to be able to major in something that will have good job prospects. (I know, I know “do something you enjoy” but the thing is I don’t really know what that is)

TLDR: my father passed away prior to sophomore year. had to help mom with everything. mediocre grades. (4 AP’s from 10-11th) no EC’s. lost.

And no I do not support Donald Trump. Just was the first thing that came to mind upon creating the username.

Well, I guess if you don’t know what your passion is you could just find 10-20 majors with good job prospects and income and just choose one randomly.

I really don’t think you should take that advice, haha, but it’s an option. I’m lost as well and I’m the same boat. I’m mediocre at everything and I really don’t know what it is that I want to do. I highly suggest seeing a college/career counselor because they’re more professional at figuring these types of things out. Good luck!

That’s generally wrong. Especially with geology - that’s an earth sciences major! But geology will require some chemistry.

What do you like? If you are average at everything, then you should pick something that you like. You’ll be more motivated to work towards in college to do well. If you don’t know, you can always wait until your sophomore year to declare. You do need to have a general area of interest so you can take a few classes in each to try them out - so having it narrowed down to 3-4 different majors is probably a good idea.

Skills are what get you a job. Of course, there are some pre-professional majors with good job outlooks - accounting, nursing, engineering. But I know several programmers and software developers who don’t have computer science majors, for example. I know lots of people working in tech who didn’t major in a physical science. You can major in what you like and then ensure that you have the skills (and internship experience) that can help you compete for jobs.

What about business, any interest there? Communications? Marketing?
