How Do You Decorate (outside or inside) for Fall???

These mason jars decorated with maple leaves is beautiful. You could put one of those fake tealights in the jar.
Easy project.

I put some mums in the garden and in pots on the front steps mixed in with a few pumpkins. A scarecrow stands by out front. Tablecoths and runners get changed and assorted pumpkins, gourds and fall doo-dads are placed around the house. Right before Halloween, I wrap the front door like a mummy and have witch’s legs sticking out of the hedge. A big cotton spider web covers the porch and the outdoor pumpkins get carved into jack-o-lanterns. The Halloween stuff is only up for 2 or 3 days.

I usually always have a nice seasonal wreath on the front door, but we recently installed a new door that is mostly glass (in order to take advantage of our lake view). Hmmm, not sure about the wreath now.

Spiders that come out this time of the year usually decorate my porch for Halloween - for free!

Never did the seasonal decorating thing.

Now in Florida- endless summer. Actually, still waiting for temps to come down below a high of 90. I do not like fall colors that well- yellows, oranges and browns- dead things depress me so I can do without bare trees et al. Housing development changes out some of the planting beds every few months- now yellow mums (by the hundreds) at entries. Poinsettias actually grow outdoors here (so does amaryllis) so they change over to them in a couple of months. Three years and I am finally getting used to mixed up planting seasons- summer flowers that only thrive in winter…

I do corn stalks on the front pillars with hay bales, mums, pumpkins, etc

I host a big thanksgiving each year and have everything you can imagine. I started small with fall garland on the mantle with candles, etc…I break out the pier one porcupine at thanksgiving…our unofficial mascot.

Decorate? I consider it a big deal that I’m mowing the lawn, deadheading the roses, and harvesting the grapes. (At Christmas, DH plugs in the lights he leaves up all year. Thankfully they are unobtrusive when not turned on.)

Just an FYI for those who love to buy mums - Costco has them - super larger (I haven’t seen them bigger anywhere) and super cheap. However, if you live in a deer sanctuary (aka most of NJ),then just save your money. They deer love them.

A little over one year later from when I started this thread - just worked on decorating outside. Last year the squirrels ate every single one of my pumpkins - big or small - down to nothing. I read to try vaseline on them - so just finished COATING mine. And not a moment too soon. I set two small pumpkins on the driveway to run a big pumpkin to the front of the house - by the time I walked back around a squirrel had already taken a nibble out of one!

I HOPE this keeps them away!

Did you decorate yet? Any new ideas this year?

H planted mums in the pots on the front steps, and pumpkins/gourds will be added in the next week or two. I have been eyeing white pumpkins and will add them the mix this year.

You better go all out since you ARE @fallgirl!

I will try vasoline. My neighbor’s have decided to feed the squirrels peanuts. So we are inundated in my yard. I will put vasoline on the pumpkins plus the repellant I bought at Home Depot.

But these animals, plus cats they entice with food put out on their front and back decks and now skunks seen 4 times on their stoops in the last two weeks, are out of hand.

I don’t.

abasket, mix some bitter apple into that pumpkin Vaseline!

Brushed the spiders off windows and lights on the porch. I do not mind spiders, but I do mind that they POOP on the side of the house!!! Going to paint the front door and plan some mums in the planter. That will be it.

It’s only October 1, and the fall decor has to last until thanksgiving…that’s a lot of vaseline! In the front of my house, I’ve already replanted my two large urns with fall colors, but very simple. I’ll place a few pumpkins on the front steps, and carve them on Halloween morning…otherwise, that’s it. We don’t use the back patio in fall, and no one will venture back there, so planting anything now is pointless. Online, I saw a hollowed out pumpkin with a potted mum stuck inside - very cute, and something I may do even though I really don’t like mums. I like Halloween and trick or treaters, but otherwise, fall is kind of blah for me.

I’d rather not try the Vaseline - but as I said, last year any pumpkin I had was reduced to seed long before Halloween!

I’m wondering if I’ll have to reapply very often - we shall see. On the bright side (literally!) the Vaseline gave the pumpkins a really nice sheen and bought out the orange color even more!

Who knows maybe the Vaseline won’t even work!

I did buy a mum (I’m also not really a fan) - my annuals - geraniums and such still look GREAT so I just incorporated some of those with the pumpkin arrangements. And put the pie pumpkins in my window boxes.

abasket, try cayenne pepper or bitter apple on your pumpkins. Or make a pumpkin catapult!!!

Here is a thought -hairspray!!!

I’m lazy. I change the flag in front of house.

Hmmm…wonder if the hairspray would “stick” with the vaseline - sort of doesn’t hurt to try!

October 1 I go completely ape for Halloween :). I build all my own decorations, so I have two mongol horde warning signs with black skulls and scimitars that move with the breeze (I drive rebar into the front garden and then mount the 8 foot stakes on them).

I have a birdbath that is painted black with “blood” dripping down it with a big gargoyle sitting in the middle of it.

I also have a big black wreath made of feathers and snakes with a moving medusa head in the middle.

I like big statement pieces vs a lot of “stuff” on the house, and I loathe fake cobwebs.

I change the LED lights on the outside of the house to orange, or red, or purple, depending on my mood.

No pumpkins or scarecrows here :D.

We live in deep woods. I do not compete with Mother Nature.
