How do you divide a dorm room?

My roommate wants to bring a futon but she doesn’t want to loft her bed. Because of the room size, the futon could really go under my bed, making my space a lot more crowded.

How did you and your roommate divide the room? What about shared items (like the fridge)? I assume I’ll sit on the futon, but I don’t really want it.

Thanks.

Divide the room in half. Decide where shared things go.

If your roommate wants a futon, she needs to fit it within her space; anything else is selfish on her part.

If she wants that futon, she’s going to need to loft her bed or find a spot in a common area that you both agree on. You don’t need to put it underneath your bed.

50-50. Her futon, her “side”. But if you’re pleasant about it, you might get to have your guests sit on it too.

You don’t need to argue with her at all; just like her, you also don’t want to loft your bed either.

A futon doesn’t really make any more space in the room; it just means people generally sit on the futon instead of the lofted bed.

Guests can sleep on an air mattress or on the floor in a sleeping bag.

You would both have more room if you lofted the beds, put the futon under one of them, and the fridge and food storage under the other. Your beds are your own space, but you’d share the futon and the fridge.

Your personal items are your closet, bed, desk, dresser and your things are yours, but much of the common space- futon, and a fridge if you share that is shared. There isn’t a lot of space in a dorm room and you can certainly divide the room in two sides with your personal things on each, but you could also share things and the space for them.

Thank you all for the answers!
