How do you dress at the end of the day before PJ's?

For the record, I love fashion and being dressed appropriately, even summer dresses for the day, running errands and such. At work, even more so.

But when I get home, I just want comfort and seem to thow shorts and tops on that are the most comfy and sometimes don’t even match well. I’m not a slob, but I don’t look put but together. When DH comes home from work, I don’t feel like I ever look nice, except when I’m in my workout clothes, which are pretty I suppose.

I have a friend who puts on ultra comfy clothes and they still match and it still looks really nice. So what do you put on…this would be just to hang around your house. Are you aware of the appearance of your clothing, or just throw on the closest thing your arms can reach? I think I’m going to make an extra effort.

Cotton caftans

Sometimes I feel like I’m reliving the whole 60s/70s hostess gown trend. Other times I imagine I’m one of those avant-garde pre-raphaelites.

I usually work out after work so, after a shower yoga pants and a new tee shirt, both of which I usually sleep in

After work I’m still likely to be outside in the yard or walking the dog in the neighborhood. So when I come home from work it’s a pair of shorts (athletic shorts or Eddie Bauer casual shorts) or leggings in the winter and a Life Is Good t-shirt or a sports bra and tank. So nothing fancy, but I don’t keep ratty old tshirts for the most part to wear anytime.

Once I’m in the the night after I work out or walk the dog I go right to the comfy pj’s - which are a pair of cotton shorts, a cami and a soft light tshirt!

I’m not trying to impress anyone but me though! I’m not dressing my H and he’s not dressing me!

I’m beginning to get a girl crush on @ahl with her caftans. I’m imagining some bold psychedelic print. 8->

While I love the idea of bold psychedelic prints, really really love it, I only wear black or white or a very small black/white design. To keep my love of clothes under control, and my closets kon mari worthy, I have to adhere to some self-imposed limiting rules. Color is one.

adding: okay - I have a very few garments in charcoal. I excuse myself by telling myself this is really just black with some white mixed in. Charcoal makes me feel a little guilty and sort of out of control. They are the first things to go when I do a clean out.

On days when I’m in class I have to wear closed-toed shoes, jeans, and an apron (art). Usually when I get home I’m just straight-up dirty and covered with paint/clay dust/ sweat, so I’ll shower and change into a cami and shorts or a sundress (one of those flowy ones) when I get home.

I am aware of looking good for H (and I enjoy looking good), so I do use perfume and I’ll throw on some lipstick, and my hair (usually in a bun during the day if I’m working) is down and brushed. It does not take a lot

In the winter I wear yoga pants and underarmour long sleeved shirts. Always in black-I look like a mod witch, lol.

I sleep naked, though, so no pj’s for me.

My summer work outfit is capris and something a step above a t-shirt. So I don’t need to change, I’m already comfortable. I do have a lot of summer dresses I never seem to wear because I actually don’t usually want to wear a dress on the job as I never know when I might end up crawling around an attic or under a deck.

conmama: thanks for this fun thread. Please just assume from here on out that I’ve “liked” every single post.

doschicos: what are you wearing?

Rats. I like the psychedelic prints.
I got tired of black and keep moving to more and more color. Makes me happy.

I have to “dress up” for work, so when I get home I put on whatever feels comfy and loose or I go to the gym and stay in my gym clothes until shower and bed.

I like my Zella harem pants and capris for lounge wear these days. Soft, comfortable, easily combined with a matching top and okay to sleep in. I add a lightweight Uniqlo Airism zip jacket as an extra layer and feel put together, though sometimes this is a bit too athleisure for the evening.

Fun topic!

@alh I don’t work any longer so I have the luxury of wearing comfortable clothes whenever I want.

When I did work, it was business casual but I often would change into something like a cotton t-shirt and some leggings when getting home. Often I’d be cooking so wouldn’t want anything too fancy that would get stained or splattered.

I’m all for the comfort factor. I’ve always been very low maintenance so my husband doesn’t know/ wouldn’t expect “dressy” me. He gets authentic me. He married me for reasons other than my looks anyway, so I don’t sweat it much from that angle.

For me a caftan is very comfortable and low maintenance. It just depends how you wear it: heels and fancy jewelry, or barefoot and nude underneath it. I do not wear high heels. I like to avoid foundation garments and underclothes whenever possible. I do not own spanx.

I do think caftans can be a serious cooking hazard. I am less worried about staining and splashing (because mine are cotton and washable and I wear aprons when I work in the kitchen) than about catching myself on fire accidentally.

I am never pretending I’m Julia Child or Alice Waters.

My go-to hang around the house outfit doesn’t look appreciably different from my workout outfits, to be honest. Right now since it’s hot, my standard is Zella City Shorts (which go to the knee), a sports bra and a tank or athletic top, sometimes a t-shirt. As it gets colder, I’ll wear longer yoga pants (not as tight as what I’d wear to an actual yoga class) and toss on a zip-front topper or fleece over the shirt, Lucy brand or similar.

I do wear “regular” pajamas at night - I like to change before going to bed.

I can’t wear my workout outfits after I work out, because I’m gross-like I will have sweated completely through them. I have towels that I keep in the car to sit on after I exercise so I don’t slide all over the leather and stink it up. It all comes into the house (including the car towel) and goes right into the wash.

I do like the whole “athleisure” clothing movement, because I’m seeing athletic clothing becoming looser and more flowy/layery.

I’d just like to point out that you can be authentic without having boogers in your nose or not having run a brush through your hair in days  . Personal attention to appearance does not mean fake or fronting, in my opinion.

Yeah, I try to keep the boogers to a minimum. I even shower daily and floss and brush my teeth and hair more than once a day.

No judgment in my comment above. I’m just describing ME and what works for ME. I’ve never cared about fashion, I’ve never worn makeup, I’ve never worn heels. I own one handbag. I appreciate when other people do it and I actually have a good eye for style - on others. My daughter likes to take me with her shopping because I have good taste and I’m honest with her about what works for her. I’m like a female Steve Jobs when it comes to personal style although I do wear more than black. It just wouldn’t be authentic to ME to be any different than I am. I would feel uncomfortable and like I wasn’t being myself, even though I’d probably look better if I did.

Hopefully that makes sense. Sorry if I gave a different impression. I was just responding to @alh’s question on what I do.

I agree-I have friends that are super sexy earth mamas, friends that would set off alarms at the Institute of Plastic, and all in-between. I think the only people I just can’t hang with are the ones that are “I don’t give a **** about myself and it shows”.

But I don’t judge those people either (unless they are stinky :-& ) because I know people like that and they are very interesting people. There minds are just focused on other things. Not to take this in another direction but sometimes there are reasons why people don’t make an effort with their appearance. It’s not an uncommon thing for past abuse victims, for example.

Steve Jobs had huge personal style, imho. He created a recognizable look and brand. Others copied it. Just google Steve Jobs, uniform, clothing style, to see how much his look mattered to folks. I really doubt it was not incredibly deliberate on his part.

Editing a wardrobe down to a very few pieces, and very recognizable look, frequently means a whole lot of thought went into the decision.

Doing your own thing instead of copying is always interesting to me, but it is pretty difficult to find a look that hasn’t been done before. There really is not much of anything really new under the sun. imho.

There is a 30 year old super stinky earth mama farming in my locale and I adore her. I do get nervous sometimes when she comes in all muddy and sits on my upholstery.

This is one of my favorite topics. Luckily for you all of you I have to put on some real clothes to go out into the real world.

ETA: doschicos, I’m guessing I would find your “look” very stylish. I truly admire minimalist. It is difficult to commit to, imho.
