How do you feel about decorative pillows on your bed?

White sheets, duvet, two pillows just hanging out in white pillow cases. :). A 19th c jacquard coverlet. It’s a period appropriate look for my old house…

I don’t object to decorative pillows, they just don’t go with my decor.

@Hoggirl , I don’t like king pillows to sleep on. We have 2 queen sleeping pillows that match our white sheets. 2 king shams that match our duvet comforter, then I put a solid decorative pillow in front of the shams, it’s rectanglular.

I pull my duvet cover back, so all the pillows are on top of the top sheet.

Oh, I actually place a small pillow between my sleeping pillows so DH takes that and places it between his knees when he sleeps.

Sigh. Your husband sounds like my Mr. Mr. B is allergic to decor, lol. Only sleeping pillows are on our bed. 3 per person.

We each have 2 pillows and zero decorative pillows. I’ll fess to rarely making the bed, so there’s that.

Our main bed has four sleeping pillows for the two of us. The guest room has two sleeping pillows, then several decorative pillows because the cases came with the comforter. I had to buy the foam inserts though. Two shams, two extra large pillows, and two small pillows. Then I found a decorative pillow at Bed Bath - it says “Meet Me by the Sea” and the colors match, so I couldn’t resist. They’re usually stacked on one side of the bed - I often sleep there because of snoring (not mine). The only times they’re out in full glory is when we have company, so never right now.

I had 5 extras years ago, and loved the look, but at some point decided I wanted a very minimalist, serene bedroom and removed almost everything extraneous from the room. Bedding is a white duvet, and two pillows each, which are used for sleeping. No shams, just white cases.

I’m with those who have no idea where to put extra decoratives when it’s time to sleep in the bed. I refuse to put them on the floor. I’m with psychomomma, going for a more serene look. I’ve admitted I like the look of a high end hotel room.

More than the decorative pillow issue, I’m into the sheets. I like good soft/crisp percale, don’t like sateen or the like. Just coming into the bedroom and knowing that’s what I’ll sleep in is the treat.

Decorative pillows go on top of the chest. Too many to fit inside. We have a stacking system

I posted this labeled as a “survey question” on my FB timeline as well. It’s gotten more responses than anything I have posted in recent history! People clearly have strong feelings about this issue, and there does seem to be a gender divide (sorry if that observation is politically incorrect). Someone on that posting mentioned this humorous clip from a movie I had not seen about the amount of time used up over life by removing and replacing decorative pillows each day:

@BunsenBurner - was it just not worth the battle? I’m starting to feel this way.

@momofsenior1 - I like your, “We have a stacking system” comment

I do like an all white, hotel look, but dh has (rightly) nixed that as he knows I will fret about keeping it pristine. Also, to me, that look works best with lots of fluffiness and layering. Living in Florida, I don’t need lots of layering. Additionally, all white just does not suit our bedroom, IMO. I tend to like matelasse coverlets. I’m sure I’m overthinking it. That’s kinda my M.O. on many things.

I have no decorative pillows. I have a silk comforter that we bought in China. We just pull it up and cover our real pillows. If it were a little longer I might pleat it under the bottom of the real pillows which is how I was taught to make a bed. Nobody ever sees our bedroom except us, and we don’t do anything in it except sleep. Putting pillows on the floor feels dirty to me and the room is too small to put them anywhere else.

Do you all make bed daily? Ooooops.

Yes on daily bed making. H’s office is connected to our bedroom by a small hallway and he uses our bathroom throughout the day. He like the bedroom neat and tidy when he comes through.

Yes. Especially now in the age of video conferencing

My view on decorative pillows (pillows you do not use) is around sanitary reason. Unless you have a clean place to place them when you are sleeping then you are just putting dirty pillows on sheets that touch your face. When I go to a hotel room, the first thing I do is to put their decorative pillows and bedspread (most hotels don’t have them any more) in the closet. If I am really picky I would ask for my bed to be made again.

I sleep with 2 down pillows and I have an extra one to balance out my king bed, but the pillows do no go anywhere but my bed.

DH hates it but we have 2 european square pillows, two pillows with shams, 2 sleeping pillows, 2 medium sized decorative pillows, a small square and then round (barrel shaped) pillow. Yep- 8 decorative and 2 sleeping pillows. But it it looks great! (And the guest room is similar!)

Yes, as soon as I get out of it.

Hoggirl & abasket: thank you for posting light hearted and distracting threads during these difficult times. It’s much appreciated.

As someone who does video conference from 8-5 (literally), I would highly recommend not to have a bed in the background. There are ways to blur it out or have a picture background.

Decorative pillows are just dust collectors, in my opinion. We don’t use them.

Re: bed coverings. We use quilts. We have summer and winter weight ones. We have nice pillowcases on our pillows. That’s it. Our bedroom isn’t a showcase room in our house that others see. We prefer to keep it simple.

My bedroom is not a showcase room even to me. I sleep there, get dressed and out until bedtime.

Pre-covid - eight pillows - two each for H and me to sleep, one body pillow for me, two shams, one ‘decorative’ - now - four pillows, two each.
