How do you feel about students hiring personal writing tutors/coaches?

Seems like some people are opposed to it. They think that students should instead work with their teachers or visit the school’s writing lab.

Yet, if the student isn’t cheating or plagiarizing, then I can’t understand the harm in it. Would they prefer for the kid to remain a mediocre writer?

Why would there be people opposed to tutoring? In anything? Swimming, driving a car, math? When you take a writing course, someone is teaching you to write, so how is it different to take private instruction.

Well not everyone can afford to hire a private tutor, so perhaps there’s a feeling that it’s unfair that the rich can get better help than the poor. Unfortunately, that’s life. I don’t think there is anything wrong with hiring private tutors as long as they understand what the school’s rules are about how much of the submitted work is the student’s.

I suspect that probably is the issue if someone has one, though it’s akin to being able to buy a nicer car, nicer house, nicer anything, because you have more money.
