How do you gift professors who write you letters of recommendation?

I got one of them a FLIR T-series infrared camera, another one a sterling silver office clock with a built in video recorder and audio bug jammer, and the third one a Justin Bieber backstage pass and front row concert seat, with an all expenses paid 3 day beach resort vacation.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t give them gifts or thank you cards until after the letter has been sent and received by the graduate schools you applied to. You don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea.

you got a professor justin bieber seats?

YOU

GOT

A PROFESSOR

JUSTIN

BIEBER

SEATS.

you may be my favourite person ever brah.

p.s. those sound like pretty fancy gifts. i usually get away with chocolate for the men and semi-precious jewelry or nice pashminas for the women. and nice hand-written cards whose covers show off my erudite taste, of course.

Infrared cameras and all expense paid 3 day vacations with backstage passes? Those are some pretty insanely extravagant gifts. I’d be lucky to be able to afford a box of chocolates or something…lol

You have a professor that likes Bieber enough to want backstage passes? That’s…unusual.

Wow. And here I’ve been delighted with a nice thank you email updating me on the student’s acceptances. Thereisnosecret, if you need a fourth letter, I’m sure I would be able to expound upon your finer qualities with great enthusiasm… :)

Hilarious! Good stuff.

^LOL

Or maybe you do??? It might enlighten them to your better qualities :)

I gave them a $50 dollar amazon gift card.

… Are expensive gifts common practice?

I gave cards and very small gift cards. My recommenders know I’m paying for school myself.

No, expensive gifts are not the norm.

@Afujiwa3 - no, gifts of any type are not common. My university prohibits any sort of gifting above the $5-10 level, and as a professor, I treasure the sincere thank you notes more than the xmas ornaments etc anyway.

You give them an envelope full of 20s, then they proceed to write you a stellar recommendation.
