I have a few rolling admissions schools on my list, and I want to apply right away at the beginning of fall for priority consideration in scholarships and whatnot.

So…how does one go about getting recommendations? Do I just give my counselor/teachers my resume in the first week of school and give them the dates that I plan to submit my applications for each school? Will they be annoyed that I plan on submitting my first applications only 3 weeks later? How does this usually work?

Also - I know it varies by school, but I can submit applications before the other materials are sent in, right?

I just asked my teachers within the first week of school. You get priority if you ask first. It won’t matter much if you apply in september or october, later than that though, the rolling may affect things.

I’m just a bit worried that it will stress them out (most kids at my school only apply to like…3 schools, and at the last minute, so I’m not sure how teachers will react to my list of 10 with all different dates).

Make it as easy as possible for teachers to fill out the recommendation forms and get them in the mail. Give your teachers pre stamped, pre-addressed 9x14 envelopes for each college you are applying to with your resume and a copy of the teacher recommendation form for the college inside the envelope. Write on the bottom left corner of each envelope the recommendation letter due date. Keep a master list of who you asked to write recommendation letters and the due dates and follow up with your teachers 2 weeks before each due date, to be sure they have mailed them.

They should be able to use the same recommendation for all the schools. And they can mail all of them by the first due date, or send them to your counselor’s office, who may be coordinating the school mailings. Check with your counselor and teachers by e-mail and see what you can line up and what times are convenient for them.

Do follow up as suggested above; verify that your recs are on schedule about two weeks before they are due.

Okay…so I could have them send in all the recommendations at the earliest date and that would be fine? The colleges would just start a folder for me, right? Even if it is before they technically start accepting applications?

Yes,that would be fine. Just remember that it will be YOUR responsibility to check with the admissions offices to make sure they have all the required documents they need to make an admission decision- SAT’s, transcripts, application fees, letters of recommendation, etc. I strongly suggest you set up a spreadsheet listing all the colleges you are applying to, all the documents the admission offices need and applicable deadlines. Then about the first of Nov [earlier if you are applying EA/ ED] start checking with the colleges to be sure they actually have all the documents in your file. Screwups WILL happen, and you just need to catch them early. Many, but not all colleges admissions websites will have an online checklist of documents they have received or are missing, or they will notify you that they are missing something, but it’s up to you to follow through and get the document or a replacement into their hands.
