My parents are amazing people and they said if i got into the school i wanted to got to they would pay for it. but i know that would set them behind a lot and probably stop them from opening their own clinic. and i dont want to apply for FA and not qualify and have it hurt my chances of getting in. But i would feel horrible if my parents spent all their money on me. what do i do?

In a nutshell, if your family can afford the tuition, then you don’t qualify for financial aid. Yes, it’s often a hardship for families to pay their kids’ secondary school tuition, but they are still expected to contribute what they can.

But, you don’t have to make the decision now. What I’d suggest is asking your parents to complete the NAIS financial aid application when it becomes available later this fall. And see what number NAIS comes up with when it calculates their suggested financial contribution. You’ll need to act quickly in order to get that information back from NAIS before the deadlines for notifying schools as to whether you do or don’t want to apply for financial aid . . . but I think it can be done.

Also, some of the schools have a simple financial aid calculator on their websites. Use that to see what your parents’ expected contribution might be.

At most schools, requesting financial aid will make it more difficult to be accepted. That’s the reality. If your family can find a way to pay the tuition without requesting assistance, it will certainly make it easier for you. But start with figuring out how much they’d be expected to pay. Then sit down and discuss it with them. Then (and this is the hard part) trust them to make the right decision about what they can and can’t do.

There were a number of threads about this topic last year - you might want to take a look back and see what you find.
