How Do You Move ITunes Music To A New Computer

I tried to transfer my itunes song library from my old computer onto a new computer using Apple’s instructions. After quite awhile I realized the library did not get transferred. The laptop has 64 bits and the old computer has only 32 bits. I do have about 100 other songs on the new laptop that my son sent to me. I checked online and have not found any simple ways to do this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When I got a new computer (this was a couple years ago…I’m assuming this would still work), I just copied the itunes music folder from the old computer to an external hard drive and then copied that onto the new computer, or copy the CONTENTS of that folder into the itunes music folder on your new computer, if there already is one. You have to authorize the new computer (and de-authorize the old one, if you don’t want it to count against the 5 machines that you can have authorized).

Worked for me…hope it helps…

Post above is correct. 32-bit OS vs. 64-bit OS is irrelevant.

Pay the geeks at Best Buy to do it.

Either answer from post 2 or 4 will work. It really is not difficult so I’d try to do it yourself first. You want to deactivate your account from the old computer and then activate the new computer (On the old computer: open itunes, store, deauthorize this computer. Then with the new computer: open itunes, store, authorize this computer).

You can have 3 different computers that work with the same iTunes account.

Don’t take your computer anywhere near Best Buy!

Call your child at college and ask him/her how to do it. The posts above should work too, as should Apple’s instructions.

^ nj2001mom, Yes, you can have itunes sharing the same account on three computers, but if the ‘old’ computer is no longer going to be used, it’s best to deactivate so it does not continue to count as one of your three.

Instructions at post #2 should work. If you’re trying to do anything a little odd, like merging two libraries, Copy Trans works well: [Transfer iPod to iTunes, copy iPod to PC and iPod to computer](http://www.copytrans.net/)

Thanks for everyone’s help. I moved the itunes library over to a thumb drive. It reads as an XML document and has 648 KB, compared to the old computer’s library which had 1.47 GB. I can’t seem to send it to the new computer’s itunes library though.

We tried it some more and then finally downloaded software from CopyTrans Control that took care of the problem quickly. Their software allows free transfers of up to 100 songs, and then a charge of $19.99 if you have more songs. It was worth it since I tried almost everything I could think of.
