How Do You People Do It?

This is in reference to people who have the whole summer to themselves who don’t work and don’t go to school. I am just curious how you pull it off. Throughout the summer I went to school and worked a small part time job. I never in my wildest dreams could think I could stay home the whole summer.

I thought first college students staying at home the whole summer was uncommon, but both of my cousins stayed home for the whole summer. They come in and out as they please and do whatever they wish. They party, go out, etc.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

We just…chill…I’m not a college student yet but I just chill most of the summer. I like it.

I really don’t disagree with it, as long as you are not out partying all the time and doing something constructive. I am just curious how you do it wihout your parents getting on your back.

I don’t have one friend, in high shool or college, who has had that kind of summer. Despite a few days off for a couple of vacations, I’ve worked 4-5 days a week all summer and so has every friend I have. A care-free, work-free summer is not common around here. I’m not forced to work, but my parents wouldn’t provide me with endless spending money if I didn’t.

I agree. I’m not forced to work either, but I work to provide myself with spending money.

I guess it just depends who you talk to. Some people work and some don’t.

Just summer…?

Try having the past 3 years like that. Owning my own business is great =/

What kind of business do yuo own? How old are you?

I hope it’s not what I think it is looking at his username

lol nice catch sv3a.

I usually work part time during the summer but my parents let me off this yr because i really hate tutoring (i can’t teach…) and i had a job all yr long.

SO yeah i was the person who stayed home and did nothing all summer long. How did i do it? i wrote a crappy essay to receive a small (but better than my pay) scholarship. since i made some money, my parents let me off this time (but this won’t happen again)

And then how did i manage to spend the whole summer not doing anything? i rolled around, slept at 4, woke up at 12 every day, watched tv all day, drew some crap for a contest i plan on entering, worked on a crappy game that I started making, watched more tv, ordered some food, rolled around or hung out with a friend all day long (watched lots of movies this yr). LOL though I’m in a different country at the moment, I missed my house and my parents so i wanted to stick around for a while (i haven’t lived with my parents since sophomore/junior yr of high school so)

My summer one year consisted of having four whole months off to myself. I did absolutely nothing in those four months and regretted it ever since. It was so boring. All I kept thinking about was “when am I going back to school?” I eventually began working out and the days went by quicker. I vowed never to do nothing again during the summer and so far I’ve been keeping to it.

My parents would never force me to work. I did work for a while when I was in school. This summer I had all that money that I built up. I would laugh at my parents if they actually thought they could force me to do something… especially something like getting a job. They do pay for a lot of my stuff even though I have a little bit of money saved… but my parents aren’t the type of people to make me do something I don’t want to.

This summer it did kind of suck though because all of my friends had jobs and I didn’t so it was hard to do something with other people.

Do I feel like I could be doing something much more productive with life? Yeah, sure. But I have the rest of my life to be productive and not many more years to be lazy. :P

My children all work 20 hrs/wk in school and during the summer too. We provide them with very little spending money during their unemployed periods, maybe $20/month each. I really don’t think it does a kid any favor to stay home and veg. Even if they are making cones at the Dairy Queen, they are better off than just hanging out surfing their computers.

Laziness is not a virtue - ever.

We do not slave drive the kids - they still go on the family vacation and can get away now and again for small trips or camps. But everyone is just happier if they have something worthwhile to do.

I work 40 hours a week each and every week during summer & winter break. I am also going to be working 25/30 hours during the school year. I would kill to have a break.

It was hard, I wish I could’ve worked this summer(but me being 17 limited my options), but I just tried to have fun and keep myself busy. Sure enough there were times I wanted to rip my hair out with boredom but this was pretty much the last non-working summer i’ll have ever, so why not enjoy it.

i’ve been working 2 part time jobs this summer, and i’ll be a college frosh. at one pt i had two part time retail jobs and one summer babysitting job but i quit one because i hated it. although at first i was disappointed with myself for not saving more money, i’ve contributed at least 770 towards getting ready for college. i also had money from graduation gifts and from a savings account my grandma had for me. also, there’s actually 900 dollars more than i needed to have for tuition (most of it was convered in loans but 600 was a local scholarship) so anyway my textbooks are also covered this year and i’ll also prolly be buying christmas presents at the school store- although i’ve been invited to come back to my sales associate job whenever i get a chance on weekends or christmas break.

with a 3 year old, a dog, a wii, an 8 month old in the house, and both parents at work… i think its wild for me to have time to go out. =p

i had a part time job (at a grocery store) for about a month in the summer, but had to quit since I didnt want to join the union. Now, I have no job, but I’ll be taking PE classes in a week from now. For now, I just use computer, watch TV, read, play basketball and chess

im gonna be a college frosh and this has been my laziest summer ever… it was pretty cool. two years ago i worked 35-40 hours a week at a clothing store and had cheerleading practices. last summer i worked 25-30 hours a week and was a cheerleading coach and captain… so ive been busy all the time.

this year my job decided to cut me off in the hours dept so i only got about 10 a week. it REALLY stinks being broke when all of your friends have money to go eat and stuff cause they all work alot but by the time i wanted anotehr job it was too late to find one. basically i just read alot, sat by my pool, went to the beach tiwce a week. been going out pretty much every night with friends which keeps me busy. most of the time i sleep until noon because im too tired from the night before.

but now since i didnt work i cant go on a ski trip over winter break with my best friends from hs… really sucks

I didn’t work this summer, but only because I couldn’t find a job. I got back late from college, and had a hard time applying, and because I needed to attend a family reunion, brother’s graduation, and a million other family functions, I wound up not being able to reapply later. Parents preferred I was in attendance at these functions without a job than for me to have a job and not “be around”. It’s the first time I haven’t had a job in a while, and it made me a little stir crazy.
