<p>Didn’t say that’s how I said it. I meant that’s how they spoke where I grew up in the D.C. Metro. I usually had to ask people to repeat what they’ve said three or four times.
I’m originally from California, so it was news to me to hear people speak like that.</p>

Groshury/Grocery: Complicated. I tend to say Groshery, but have a bad habit of starting to pronounce the c sometimes in that and similar words. Sociable =“socee[hesitation]…soshuble” We don’t say Assoshiation, so why do we say soshuble? I don’t know. Maybe that’s just me.</p>

<p>I speak VERY, VERY differently when at home than when I’m away at school/on a job. People who hear me talking to someone back at home on the phone are very quick to point it out. In highschool they offer classes to reduce/remove your accent, which you more or less have to take if you want to get into any sort of radio or TV work, but it’s mildly encouraged if you plan on ever leaving the place. When I’m away people say I don’t have much of an accent except on certain words, like pin=pen or color=collar.</p>
<p>Just to clear something up, I know a lot of people say words differently and there’s no “correct” pronunciation on some of these per se.</p>
<p>However, the word “often” is only correctly pronounced “offen.” Aka, no T. It was like this for a while but obviously the incorrect pronunciation is heard so commonly that no one seems to care anymore. But I hold that saying “of-ten” is a mispronunciation.</p>
<p>You can argue that since it’s usage has grown so much that it’s acceptable now to use the “newer” pronunciation. However, realize that it would be akin to saying puh-numonia for pneumonia or puh-sich-ology for “psychology.”</p>
<p>And if you intentionally say “of-Ten” to sound more formal or smarter, you are, ironically, revealing your idiocy.</p>
