If they are really large with 700+ people, how can we see what the prof writes on the board? Also, is it easy to get a front seat (first 4 rows), or do those fill up fast?

Either the professor uses powerpoint or the board is projected onto the screen via video camera and projector.

You can usually find seats in the front, especially the very front row. Most people prefer the 2nd row for some reason.

It’s really not a big deal. Yes there are always seats in the front, lot of people prefer the middle and back. You can see the board just fine in most classes, but in the biggest classes in Pimentel or Wheeler they have a projector on a giant screen showing the part of the board the professor’s writing on. Sort of like the giant screens in concerts. And most classes that do this also post webcasts online at webcast.berkeley.edu

I like using binoculars.

i hate the pimentel board. i just remember not being able to see anythig rine would write for bio 1a. probably the reason i never went to his lecs, what with having to constantly squint and give myself a headache…

you don’t.

only the people in the first 4 rows can really see anything on the board and it is VERY difficult to get in these seats.

what happens here is that the first 4 rows of students take notes on what is on the board

then the 5th row copies what the 4th row’s written by looking over their shoulders

then the 6th row copies the 5th row’s notes by the same tactic

this goes on all the way to the 128th row of the classroom.
those in the back usually have to stay an extra 5 minutes after class to run up to the board and copy the last remaining notes on the board.

^ I know, such a pain… I hate it when the person in front of my have bad hand writing. I’d say there is a 10 min lag time between the first row to the 128th row

^ yeah 10 min is about right.

but hey at least in small classes it’s not much of a problem.
i mean, the lag from the 1st row to the 96th row isn’t too bad (like 5-7 mins)

god public schools ****ing suck

Now y’all have me worried. I have CS61A in Pimentel next semester.

I’d actually suggest that if you’re in Pimentel or something like that, do not sit in the very front if they use powerpoint/things on the screen and not the board. I did that the first day of Chem1A lecture and it got so uncomfortable to have to crane my head up at the powerpoint screen for an hour. Sit in the middle so that you’re still within distance and paying attention if you want to ask questions, but not so close that you have to uncomfortably look up for a long time.

Ugh. I’m choosing between Berkeley and NYU, but now I’m leaning to NYU. Berkeley just has such a better program and more class selections in my major, IR.

There also seems to be a discrepancy in views. What is it? Easy to get seats in the front or not?

I have bad eyesight, so it’s especially hard for me to see. I usually can’t see anything past the 5th row in a highschool class

You do realize that more than half the posts in this thread are sarcastic right?

ahaha I love it when sarcasm doesn’t translate over internet…

Dang Crowslayer, that post was gold hahahaha.

I thought it was sarcastic. I know the reading over sholders thing is, but I thought it was a satire that meant it was still hard to read

… you’re kidding, right?
that wasn’t the sarcastic part of my post… this was:
truth be told, after class everyone basically has to jog about 0.5 to 1 mile to reach their next class, so it’s really unwise to stay even 1 minute after class ends (lest you be late to your next class and then fail yet again to get one of the coveted “First-4-Rows” seats [widely known here at Cal as FFRs])

back-to-back failing to get one of the FFRs is really the crown jewel to any terrible day here in berkeley :\ really depressing stuff sometimes, especially as a frosh…

thinking about it, maybe you should go to nyu, i feel this isn’t really what you’re looking for in a college experience…

sigh. I have to do LSP there

this is what it actually looks like. usually, at least one of the two lower screens is pulled down and mirrors the gigantic screen above.

sorry for ending the sarcasm

I wonder how many more computer incidents have happened to Rine since his FBI spiel.

And to answer the question, I prefer to carry around these sweet things: http://images.hayneedle.com/mgen/master:ZHUL054.jpg?is=1600,1600,0xffffff
