How Do You Spend Election Night?

Wow, I feel like a bad member of the LGBT community now :(. Thanks all for the heads up. I’ll know what to watch for now!

In WA state here-H and I always watch but this year have several candidates and measures we’re following. It’s really looking like gay marriage is going to pass here-crossing fingers. I like the idea of adding champagne to the mix-will have to make a stop and get some.

If things go well, in Washington you’ll soon be able to smoke a joint at a gay wedding.

^ Luckily, my top choice for grad school is University of Washington  haha

Usually I prefer to pace and twitch at home just with family but this year DH and I will watch with friends. We’ve been assured there will be plenty of alcohol and unhealthy snacks to help pass the hours of commentators blather. I do think it’s likely to be a long and interesting night, with the house and Senate races potentially more determinative of the next 4 years’ direction than the White House.

Our son is a Marshall scholar in London and will be watching at the embassy with his cohort. Our daughter will be watching in Moscow where she is visiting as part of a student policy group. How cool is that?

Downtoearth, Amy’s is one of the safest seats in the country. There is zero chance that she will lose, she is up by something like 35 points. My D also worked for her one summer in DC. :)

My husband will be on an airplane on an overseas business trip, the girls are both away at school, and we lost our dogs this past year, so it will me just me. I’ll stop at the gym on my way home from work and catch the east coast returns, then head home and watch the west coast and state/local results.

We were invited to a party, but it’s too far away in CT, especially for a work night and after Sandy seems unwise, but we’ll be watching at home. DH will almost certainly go to bed before the election is called, but I’ll probably stay up until someone concedes. There are some local elections that interest me.

I’ll be working at the local party headquarters all day, on call for voter protection issues and helping line up rides to the polls. I’m in Maryland and hoping to celebrate victories for marriage equality and the state version of the Dream Act. After the polls close, I’ll join friends at a party to watch the returns.

I don’t know that the two measures in Wash state discussed are a slam dunk, as far as passing. No guess on the marijuana measure, but in this insular blanket we live in, in Seattle, people don’t think about the rest of the state not being as liberal. As far as the gay marriage measure goes, we already have “everything but marriage”, and there still is resentment from the gay marriage supporters relentless desire to reveal all names and addresses of those who signed a referendum not supporting gay marriage. I believe that many Washingtonians are very repelled by intimidation, even if they are fine with gay marriage. But what do I know.

We have to work on election night, and I don’t think many of our candidates are going to win anyways, so maybe it’s better off not watching anyways. Usually we just watch TV and drink wine, with some occasional yelling and cursing going on, kind of like a major football game.

intparent, I was thinking that you weren’t in WA, but thought differently when you referred to “our state” when talking to mini.

George Takei posted an image detailing the states with LGBT measures on the ballot. Maine is also one of the states.

I didn’t realize how many CC parents live in WA.

It’s amazing to me what different states are voting on. Here in Alabama, people are waiting to see if Roy Moore (the former chief justice who had a monument to the Ten Commandments built and put in the Alabama Supreme Court) becomes Chief Justice and if voters will approve an amendment to remove language in the state constitution that provides for segregated schools and possibly the right to a public education.

I remember the year that they called Reagan over Carter a few hours before the polls closed here on the West Coast. I hadn’t voted yet, so I went with John Anderson since it didn’t matter anyway and I liked the idea of a third party candidate. That was the only year that I wasn’t glued to the TV all evening.

mini, where’s the party?
I hope to attend a few gay weddings here in WA in the coming years (altough I’ve been to one - officialted by a rabbi and a Catholic priest :)), but I also hope there will be no smoking of ANY kind. No Camels, no doobies. No thanks!

This year H and I are going to a pizza and wine party being hosted by our rector at our church to watch returns.

I can’t imagine any outcome that would justify not drinking the champagne.

I’ll probably be bleary-eyed, wringing hands and drinking jack daniels.

DH is a politics junkie; I consider my self interested and informed, but not fanatical. We’ll be watching at home like we usually do. When the kids were still home, they watched with us. I’m sure we’ll be in contact with them through some means tomorrow night.

S2 was a freshman in college in DC 4 years ago, celebrating in front of the White House when the results were clear. He’s still in DC, but isn’t close to the White House now, so I’m assuming he’ll either be home or with friends watching the returns.

I’m going out to dinner with a friend … unrelated to anything political.

Regarding the election: I’ll read the paper Wednesday morning … when all’s said and done … hopefully.

(I’m the antithesis of a political junkie … though I do vote.)

cromette, I should have known you were a fellow Jack Daniels girl!

I’m surprised how many people watch with friends or in a group. Is it a group with a political affiliation, like people you did GOTV work with? I just don’t talk politics with many of my friends so I’d feel weird watching the returns with them as I don’t know their reaction. It’s kind of like when my team makes the Super Bowl (and it’s been awhile) – I kind of want to be alone in my misery if my team loses. ;)

Probably working late, ignoring the election and reading CC as CC doesn’t allow political stuff.
