How do you sweeten your coffee a healthy way?

I’ve been using stevia and no sugar hazelnut creamer. I’ve been reading those just aren’t good and cause major bloat and other issues.

I’d like to try something else to make it more palatable with no added sugars. I hate the bitterness of coffee, and don’t enjoy tea every morning (I tried that). Cinammon? Vanilla extract? Just need suggestions.

I use real sugar. I figure it’s the least artificial, and the two or three teaspoons a day isn’t going to make much of a difference in any regard. I do love my sugar.

Hm, I’ve been using stevia for years and have not ever seen anything about stevia re: bloat and other issues? Am curious what you’ve read about that.

I don’t know about the nut milk creamers though, I think there may be some culprits hidden in there with various gums and thickeners. I just use 2tbs of half&half - it’s 40 cals, no carbs, and just enough to cut the bitterness.

@thermom, there is a lot of contradiction on the web, but I read this article. I also always seem so bloated after my coffee.

I am pre-diabetic, and am trying to do the intermittent fasting and eating protein for my first meal to not raise my insulin levels right away. I honestly don’t remember why that’s good, I read an article and a nutritionist friend told me the same. Eat carbs later.

@VeryHappy , I agree about a small amount of sugar, but my issue is insulin levels, too.
Regarding sugar, a woman shouldn’t have more than 25 grams of sugar a day. It’s amaxing how much sugar is in all sorts of food. So be careful with the added. A teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams. In and of itself that’s not bad, but we have to include that in the 25 grams.

I just tried putting cinammin , a drop of vanilla extract and almond milk. That cut the bitterness a lot but it wasn’t satisfying. Maybe nothing will be.

When I’m at home on the weekend I just use raw sugar - and I always use half and half which is a “must” to me.

At work we have packets of something called “Whole Earth” - a zero calorie sweetener with stevia and monk fruit. Just started using it this week. The back of the packet says “suitable for individuals with diabetes” - for what it’s worth!

I only drink one cup a day so I’m going to make sure it’s the way I want it - and a past poster convinced me that my half and half in one cup of coffee would bring a lot more joy than health worries.

I used to put sugar in my coffee - in college I used to put ice cream in! - but I gradually cut back until I didn’t put anything at all in. I put quite a bit of milk in though which I heat up and sometimes also froth so it’s latte like. If I’m drinking an English Breakfast style tea, I like regular milk (not nearly as much as I put in my coffee) and about 1/4 tsp of sugar. I’m of the school that would prefer to just use the real stuff - so it’s real milk, real sugar.

I’ve also done similar to Mathmom where I take an Ikea frother (best $3 item on the planet!!), froth some half and half in a mug, add my coffee and then sprinkle just a wee bit - probably a 1/2 teaspoon of raw sugar on top. Gives me the sugar taste when sipping but doesn’t saturate the coffee.

Use better coffee? Something smoother so you need less sweetener? I’m a sugar and milk coffee drinker, a little of both, but I’ll spring for a better brand of coffee.

I’ll look into the monk fruit, @abasket . I agree about weighing issues and the enjoyment we get. I also only drink one cup. Would love to experiment.

Sweet 'N Low.

Why?

Nothing about sugar and sweeteners is healthy, sorry.

Whole milk can add a bit of sweetness to coffee, although it won’t be as sweet as coffee to which you have added sugar or some other sweetener. But if you can get used to drinking coffee with just whole milk, you won’t miss the sweetness and will also be getting some beneficial fats that can reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease.

Why sugar, or 25 grams of sugar, @VeryHappy ? I might be wrong about naturally occurring sugar in fruit. Perhaps that doesn’t count.

Half a teaspoon of manuka or Hawaiian honey for Mr. I don’t like my tea of coffee sweet.

I know a woman who drinks what she calls “bulletproof coffee.” You can find recipes online, but basically it’s adding one tablespoon of butter and one of coconut oil to cut the bitterness. I think it sounds foul, but she swears by it.

That’s gross.

Yes, @BunsenBurner, it is.

I just finished my morning coffee with 2% milk. It allows me to add more milk than I would with half and half, and it “sweetens” the taste. Almost latte-like.

Years and years ago, I switched to putting cream in my coffee instead of sugar, and it was a pretty easy switch. It takes away the bitterness, and you can get used to, and enjoy, the coffee flavor without the sweet.
