I take notes while reading. After I’m done with a paragraph, I usually summarize it with a sentence or two, and so on and so on. I used to just read/skim a chapter and then go back and take notes.

I don’t actually take formal reading notes - when I read the book, it’s to supplement class notes, and so I’ll highlight stuff so it’s easy to find when I need it. If we’ve already talked about it in class and we missed something, I’ll just write it in my class notes.

In the beginning of the year, for APUSH, I took notes as I went along for every chapter. However, as we got further into the year and all of my classes got more and more intense, it simply took too long and I stopped taking notes for a while. However, this made studying much harder, so I developped a new technique: I read the chapter, take the list of IDs our teacher gives us, and use Wikipedia to flesh out each term (IDs are bolded and underlined, and if they’re referred to again other IDs they get bolded so that it’s easier to see connections).

Oh, and I also read the summaries in the PR APUSH book to supplement the above come exam time.

I take notes for APUSH, but I never actually use the notes after I make them. I guess I am the type of person who learn/memorize through the process of writing stuff down. But typically, focus on the bolded words and you can pretty much set for most classes.
