Hey buddies and parents:
I’m a 12th grade student, in recent months I’m so busy , because I want to apply the university in OCT. I still have an ideal that is to be an outstanding architect since 2002. Nowadays, I will choose the architecture (5 years B.Arch) as my major. And in my list have 6 universities : Carnegie , Rensselaer , Syracuse , UT-Austin , VT , IIT . Can you give me a rank in your mind about this 6 schools and tell me your opinions about this 6 universities. Thanks so much.

This survey has been out for awhile, and it will probably be updated sooner or later (maybe it already has…)

[The Top U.S. Architecture Schools](http://www.architectmagazine.com/industry-news.asp?sectionID=1006&articleID=602885)

It should answer your question about ranking. But, be aware that there are many fine schools out there with excellent architecture programs that are not on this list.

And, really, there is so much more to consider. Visit the schools that interest you. Each will have a “vibe” which you will either like or not. Consider the program size, studio space, professors, location, opportunities within the college, study abroad programs, available summer internships, etc.

Work on your portfolio. Find out what each school stresses that they want to see in the portfolio (for example, Cornell insists on demonstrating drawing skills, CMU doesn’t specify).

And find your safety school. Every school on your list is very competitive (I am not familiar with IIT, so I may be wrong).

Syracuse is a really great architecture school. The people are really nice there and the admission staff treats you really well when you visit the campus. Try to sit down with one of the admission counselors when you visit. I think it is ranked #4 in the country.

Also consider: Penn State, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State.

Thanks a lot. I also found Syracuse is ranked #4 in the nation, Could you tell me the ranks (B.Arch) about RPI , USC and VTech in the country. Thanks.

At the same time how do you think about RPI and USC and UT-Austin ?

Oops, I forgot add Rice University into my list. So, now the new edition of my list is also 6 school, they’re CMU, RPI , Rice , USC , Syucase , UT-Austin. I hope someone or parents can give me some advises and some opinion about this 6 univeristies. Thanks a lot.

10years: my son just started at USC. In comparing the curriculum to Penn State and Syracuse, all 3 were very similar–not much different. He chose USC based on the campus, the strong alumni network, good architecture rep, and LA. Penn State is a very large school overall (student population and acreage) in a really small town, Syracuse is a smaller school in medium size city, and USC is a large school in a very large city. While USC has 16,000 undergrad students, there are 16,000 graduate students so overall it is a good size school.

msheft: thanks for your opinion and your opinion are so useful for me. Also your son just started at USC is a great success I think. Virtually, The most universities I want to go to are CMU , RPI , USC and Rice. Could you tell me some advises or some difference about this 4 schools, Thanks.

10years: I don’t know anything about CMU, RPI, and Rice. Those 3 never made my son’s initial cut of 12 schools.

10years: you speak like Borat, it’s kindof amusing

Now that you’ve narrowed down 6 schools of great quality, you need to rather put together information on each school than just rank them. By fully understanding each school’s program you will learn to like one or two particular schools that would fit you better. Good luck…
