how does a college know if you chose them as a safety or not??

I’m no expert but I have some ideas:
- You aren’t on their mailing list and they have never heard your name until the application landed before the committe.
- You haven’t visited the school and are close enough to make a day trip.
- Your scores are way above the average.
- Your “Why School X” essay was very unconvincing.
- You rejected the offer of an interview.

Mostly, it’s lack of perceived interest. If you don’t convince the committee that you want to attend their school, they’ll likely save the spot for someone else.

Didn’t you check the no box when they asked?
