How does a good kid fit in at college?

Hi guys,

I guess you could call me a goody two-shoes. I’m an Asian who is polite and caring to my friends. I never cuss or insult people, and I always do my homework. Basically I’m that nerdy A+ kid who doesn’t have much of a social life outside of my loads of extracurricular activities.

I’m scared for college, you could say, because I don’t know what to expect. I don’t do drugs, smoke, drink, or have sex on weekends. You should note that I’ve never gone on a date before, and I’m basically a good kid to my parents. I care about having good friends, staying close to my family, getting good grades, and having fun that doesn’t involve crime, sex, or drugs.

Will I be an outcast in college? Are there people like me? Will people date someone like me? Or should I accept the inevitable and hop on the bandwagon?

Oh geez
Not saying that your lifestyle is an issue, because everyone is different.
Let’s start by answering your questions.
You will most definitely meet people like you, but you’ll have to search for those friends.
Join some clubs that matches your interest, and I am certain that you’ll find wonderful friends. Definitely NO, you will not be an outcast in college.
Good girls are cute. I’m very sure people will date girls like you. Especially a guy who is an intellectual match.
I have to say one thing though…DO NOT GIVE INTO PEER PRESSURE. If you don’t want to drink, smoke, sniff, make the sexy time, commit a crime, or party all night long, you definitely don’t have to. You can prove that you don’t have to do all of those things to have fun. Just be you, and you’ll have a successful 4+ years with amazing people and amazing experiences.
I promise you ;)

That’s the great thing about college - you’ll find kids of all types there. I was like you, and lived in a dorm full of partying sorority girls. I still managed to find a group of girls like me. We had a good time without giving into peer pressure. I had a blast in college even though I was a hard-studying engineering student on the honor roll. Grad school was even more fun!

I read “make the sexy time” and snorted my drink all over the place… My beard is stick now.

But anyway, you should be fine, OP… I know lots of people like you who graduated last year, and I myself are sort of like that – a virgin (women are crazy, I don’t want to get that involved), have never smoked (don’t see the point, plus I don’t like the smell), and have only drank a few times ( and only with family). I spend most of my time at home, too… I think we’ll live, ahah – I know lots of people like us headed to college.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of college students who are not into recreational drugs (legal or illegal) and can keep their sex drives within reason. (However, the more outrageous ones seem to get noticed more.)

Don’t do anything you don’t wanna but at least make sure to have an answer ready if someone asks you to do those things, cause it’s probably gonna happen. And don’t talk down to those who do. Could be living next to you after all. There’s no reason to be scared though. Others drinking is not gonna affect you, unless they do something like pull the fire alarm…

First of all, of course there are students like you. You have to remember that the students in college were the best students at their high school, and the students at the top colleges were the best of the best. Most of them don’t do hard drugs extensively, and a lot of them may have never smoked, drank, or had sex before they attended college.

The other thing is that a lot of people change in college - so just because you are this way now doesn’t mean you will always feel that way. I didn’t drink or smoke before I went to college, nor was I sexually active - actually, I was a lot like you - but I tried those things in college and liked some of them.

lol, you’ll be just fine. Asians are like robots: once their parents have programmed them, they never steer off course. You’ll find a lot of people like yourself at college.

Yeah a lot of ppl do change because college is the first opportunity and the first time in protracted periods of stress. You might find yourself wanting to drink or whatever, despite what you think about it now.

Not sure if you are male or female… but if you are female, and you applied to any (assume you are a senior), some of the women’s colleges (SOME) have less partying.

You could also sign up for substance free housing, almost all colleges have this option. Occasionally there are issues (kids who end up in sub free who aren’t sub free kids for various reasons), but in general it is a good way to avoid a hard-partying floor and meet some like-minded students in your dorm.

I don’t know if you meant to come across this way, but you sound like you think you’re better than a lot of other students.

The best way for you to fit in is to get off your high horse. Don’t think that because of all the things you mentioned, you’re a better person or a better student than anyone else. Assuming superiority over your peers is the fastest way to ensure that people won’t like you, not even your professors.

I’m not trying to undermine your values - they’re pretty solid. You don’t have to drink, smoke, or do anything you don’t want to. But keep an open mind and try not to judge everyone who is different from you. Sure, sometimes you can immediately tell that certain people are trouble, but that’s not how most people are.

I was really really tempted to post something along the lines of “There’s no hope for you. Everyone in college is a dangerous criminal involved in drug deals and people even have sex in class all the time. If you go to college all of your politeness and good grades will be stripped from you and you’ll probably be pressured into joining a gang.”

However, I feel like you would benefit from a more serious answer. Just be yourself and try not to judge people who lead different lifestyles.

^ Huh? The OP’s post has nothing condescending in it at all. Describing oneself with words that have negative connotations such as “goody two-shoes,” “nerdy,” and “doesn’t have much of a social life,” does not express a feeling of superiority at all.

Although 27dreams may have been wrong about the tone of the OP, his point is still a good one. As long as you can go to school and not judge others for the things they do in their spare time, then things will go fine.

The smartest kids in my high school who never went out have found a place here (UMD-College Park). The statement that there are “so many clubs” in college is only half-true though, because I have found that most of them are BS clubs that aren’t much of anything at all. I will tell you that if you are living in dorms, and they are are poor quality as my state flagship’s, then you would rather be out doing drugs and living under the influence than being in your prison cell (dorm room).

Edit: 27dreams shares the same opinion as me lol, the post sounded a little ridiculous. You know that you aren’t going to be forced to do anything you don’t want to.

Just because you like quickies on weeknights doesn’t make it better.
