How Does Attending Berkeley Affect How You Look on Grad School Apps?

I’m starting at Berkeley as a transfer (in two weeks! Signed up for summer session). I’m a psych major who would like to move on to a clinical psych program. I’ve already emailed several people about getting a research position, but after reading how insanely difficult clinical psych doctorate programs are to get into (specifically this link - [Applying to PhD Programs in Clinical Psychology](http://www.psychwww.com/tipsheet/applyphd.htm) ), I just want an idea of how far ahead going to Berkeley instead of somewhere like Sonoma State puts me.

i would say negatively…but that would be for a technical field where it’s hard to get good grades. Psych is relatively easy and doing well isn’t that a huge deal, it’s ranked well so I’m going to go ahead and say **positively **for a clinical psych program. Just make sure to do well on the GRE because pretty much everyone will be applying with a good GPA.

depends on your gpa. you’ll get a boost for going to a hard technical school, but if you’re not careful your gpa will suffer more than the boost you get.

if you study hard and smart you’ll be fine.

Maybe. The tradeoff is for grad school, your undergrad institution being a strong school actually helps you a lot.

I don’t need any statistics to back that up, you can get that from the mouth of the admissions committee at a school.

This is because “big name” in terms of prestige is full of nonsense, but “big name” in terms of academics means something to grad schools - and Berkeley is one of those amazing names that makes an academically minded individual [like a professor] perk up.
