how does columbia compare to other top ranked schools?

A) You don’t know what my income is and I’m not going to indulge your curiosity.
B) I pursued a particular specialty that I was intellectually interested in. It was not predicated on making-the-most-amount-of-money-in-the-least-amount-of-time. Money followed because I was good. By the way, the person who rose in my field quickest (along with myself) was (gasp, horrors) a Michigan grad.
C) I stepped off a high-profile career ladder for an opportunity to enable me to spend time with my family and work out of my home. I’d have a fancier title today if I hadn’t done that, and a hell of a lot more money, but so what.
D) Yes, my NU degree opened a lot of doors, no question. What you don’t get is that once you walk through those doors, it’s you who makes the difference. Not your degree. No one cares after you land that first job – and they don’t care ten minutes after you’ve started your first day on the job.
E) There is value in any job no more how humble, and your snottiness about “mere” primary care physicians or “mere” elementary school teachers isn’t becoming at all.

WTH are you talking about, DevilKnight???

^^ are you high?

I’ve been a long time member of CC and it’s been awhile since I’ve checked up on it. It’s a shame, as a Duke alum, that certain representatives of my school should need to resort to incendiary language to get (or rather, not get) their points across. A mark of an educated person is being able to discuss a differing viewpoint in a constructive manner, without the need turn it into an argument or debase another. Hopefully, a few more semesters at Duke will get that point across.

Pizzagirl, you didn’t address any of my points. I don’t care about your silly personal issues. The fact remains that you live a very priviledged life and are in no position to advise worse-off young people, whose parents are doing their best to fund an expensive elite education, to “follow their dreams” and throw away a more practical career that promises some degree of financial security. The ability to “follow your dreams” is a luxury and not a right. You just don’t get it. You think I’m snotty but you basically assume everyone is as financially well-off and can do whatever their little hearts desire. This view is elitist to the core.

^^ Stop ■■■■■■■■. PLEASE. You’re making Duke look incredibly bad.

Wow… some of the most brilliant people I’ve ever known - people who have conceived groundbreaking ideas and creations - either never went to college or went to colleges that would be laughed at on these boards. Some even dropped out of great schools because the institutional thinking was holding them back.

I wish someone classy and respectful from Duke would appear on these boards. Between the alums I’ve known in real life and the students/alums/boosters I’ve enountered on this board, I’m struggling to find some class.

Oh good! There’s one!

Btw, I don’t think DevilKnight is a Duke student and I’m very ashamed of what he’s posting here. If one of the posters on this thread created another account to masquerade around as an idiotic person who is supposedly affiliated with Duke to make the school look bad, then you seriously have bigger issues to deal with that go beyond this discussion.

I think that he is. He just PM’d me:

whistles

Okay, EAD, I’m zeroing in on your issue – you don’t think it is respectful for a student attending HYPSM from a lower middle class family to graduate and not be in a financial position to repay his/her parents.

You will be very glad then that students with income less than $60,000 will pay zero at Harvard, Princeton, and maybe a few more schools, and that students at Stanford this year with family incomes under $100,000 will pay zero tuition (I assume they will pay room/board/books, but didn’t read the press release that carefully).

It is precisely because of your concerns that the most elite colleges have eliminated loans to middle income families sending their children there… they want their students to enter the world unfettered by college debt, free to choose any path they want… general physician, school teacher, stay at home parent, social worker, grad school, whatever.

Duke has already took a nosedive in my book. Incessant pride is fun, but when it comes to incendiary language and ■■■■■■■■, it gets stupid.

hi fellow ccers! i happened to come across this thread and I got a little worried by the negativity…why can’t we all get along…and now I am regretting my decision to go to duke…is it really that bad? how do i get out of the agreement? please anyone help me

and is devilknight really representative of the faculty and students at duke?

There.

10char

No, he’s not. He might not even go there or he might have just been really drunk/high when he wrote all that.

There is just generally a more aggressive and negative attitude toward other schools presented on these boards from many who associate with Duke.

It’s a big school. I’m sure you will find plenty of great people.

Well, parent contribution is eliminated for families making less than $60k at H and P. The same goes for Stanford and probably Yale too. At Stanford, families making up to $100k will not have to pay for tuition (“the parent contribution will be no higher than the standard cost of room and board (around $11,000)”). Families making below $45k will have tuition, room, board, travel, books, etc. all paid for. At Stanford, families making up to $150k will pay significantly less (35% less than in the past).

i think devilknight may just be really anti-duke, and therefore, is trying to embarrass the school…

although most of you disagree with EAD (i agree with him/her to a certain extent), he/she is arguing coherently but has really strong opinions…

anyways, it’s unfortunate that my school is putting such a bad taste in all of your mouths just because of a person who is deliberately trying (it’s obvious) to bring down duke…

so duke isn’t that bad then afterall…right?

^^
It’s not just him.
